ANSI/ESD S8.1 is the EOS/ESD Association standard that clarifies the meaning of ESD-awareness symbols. It distinguishes marks for ESD susceptibility, ESD-protective materials, and common-point grounding. A symbol identifies a warning or intended use; it does not, by itself, establish a product’s performance level.
What is the ESD symbol standard?
ANSI/ESD S8.1 standardizes commonly used ESD-awareness symbols and explains what each means. The cited preview is the 2017 edition, ANSI/ESD S8.1-2017. ANSI’s current explainer describes ANSI/ESD S8.1-2021, and 2025 notices document a BSR/EOS ESD S8.1-202x revision project. These edition references matter when checking artwork: confirm which edition a supplier or sign claims to follow rather than treating the standard as an editionless label rule.
The standard states: “The purpose of this document is to standardize commonly available and in-use symbols and to clarify the meaning of each of these symbols.” — EOS/ESD Association, ANSI/ESD S8.1-2017.
What do the three symbols mean?
ESD susceptibility symbol
The familiar graphic—a reaching hand inside a triangle crossed by a slash—identifies an electrical or electronic device or assembly that can be damaged by an electrostatic discharge event if mishandled. It is a warning about the item’s susceptibility, not a mark showing that the item is protected.
ESD protective symbol
This mark identifies a material or product intended to provide some level of protection to ESD-susceptible devices or assemblies. It communicates protective intent; the symbol alone does not say what level of protection is provided.
ESD common-point-ground symbol
This symbol identifies the location of a common-point-ground terminal or connection. It helps users identify where grounding connections attach.

Does an ESD symbol prove a product is protected?
No. ANSI/ESD S8.1 leaves application of the symbols to the supplier’s discretion, and displaying a symbol does not constitute or imply a specific level of product performance. In particular, a susceptibility mark warns that an item can be damaged by ESD; a protective mark indicates that a material or product is intended to provide some protection, but does not establish its effectiveness or rating.
For a performance decision, check the product’s specifications and supporting test information, along with the ESD-control requirements applicable to your work. A symbol is an identification or handling cue, not a substitute for that evidence or for a complete ESD-control program.

Where should each symbol be used?
- Susceptibility: on or with static-sensitive devices, assemblies, or their packaging, to warn that mishandling can cause ESD damage.
- Protection: on materials designed to provide ESD protection, to identify their intended role.
- Common-point ground: at the grounding terminal or connection, to show where grounding connections attach.
Desco’s supplier guidance references ANSI/ESD S8.1 and directs users to the ESD Association’s symbol artwork. For labels or signage, check that the artwork aligns with the applicable edition; also consider whether the label’s substrate and durability suit the environment and whether the symbol will be large and visible enough to serve its purpose. A label’s presence alone is not proof of compliance or performance.
