Tavus’s Conversational Video Interface (CVI) is a developer platform for building AI agents that interact with people in real time over video—not simply generating a talking-head clip from a script. Tavus describes the experience as combining a real-time digital face, multimodal perception, conversational understanding and turn-taking. Those capabilities are vendor-described; the published performance figures have not been independently validated in the material available here.
What Tavus AI does
CVI is Tavus’s developer-facing layer for embedding face-to-face AI conversations in an application. A person can speak with an AI agent while it responds in a rendered digital likeness, rather than waiting for a prerecorded or script-generated video. Tavus calls these agents personal AI counterparts, or PALs. Its current CVI overview describes the platform and model components at Tavus.
The distinction matters: a video generator turns supplied text into a video, while a live conversational system must also interpret incoming signals, decide when someone has finished speaking, and produce a timely reply. CVI is aimed at the latter. A video-call-like interface is one way to present it, but the exact integration depends on what a developer builds.
How Tavus says the live system works
Tavus presents CVI as coordinated model components rather than a single avatar generator. The current names and roles below are Tavus’s product descriptions; model labels and availability can change.
#1 Best Overall
- 12.3 MP Sony IMX500 Intelligent Vision Sensor with a powerful neural network accelerator
- Integrated low-power inference engine
- Integrated RP2040 for neural network and firmware management
- Pre-loaded with MobileNet machine vision model
- Sensor modes: 4056×3040 at 10fps, 2028×1520 at 30fps
| Component | Role described by Tavus |
|---|---|
| Phoenix-4.5 | Renders facial behavior in real time, including expressions and movement. |
| Raven-1 | Interprets multimodal signals, so the system can perceive more than the spoken words alone. |
| Sparrow-2 | Handles conversational understanding and timing, including interruptions and background speech. |
| Griffin | Labeled as a preview; Tavus associates it with live-video capability. |
In practical terms, rendering supplies the visible response, perception helps the agent interpret what is happening, and conversational processing determines what to say and when to say it. The details available here do not establish exactly which inputs—such as camera, audio, or screen context—are enabled by default in every deployment. Developers should confirm the current API and configuration options in Tavus’s current product materials.
How CVI differs from Tavus’s earlier video generation
Tavus’s March 2024 Phoenix launch focused on generating replica videos from scripts, with facial movement and expression synchronized to generated voice. In August 2024, the company announced CVI as a platform for real-time conversations with digital twins and other agents. That shift is from creating a finished video to enabling an interactive exchange.

The August announcement described creating digital twins or stock agents, embedding meeting rooms, and recording, transcribing, and sharing conversations. Those are historical product capabilities, not a guarantee that each integration or feature remains available in the same form today. See Tavus’s CVI announcement for that launch context.

- Phoenix rendering: Tavus reports 134 ms latency. The reviewed product page does not state a test date or enough version and test-method detail to treat that figure as a general end-to-end conversation latency.
- Phoenix preference test: Tavus says Phoenix was preferred 2:1 in blind head-to-head testing. The page does not state the date, sample size, or comparison setup, so the ratio should not be generalized beyond that undisclosed test.
- Raven perception: Tavus reports context freshness of less than 300 ms; the page does not specify the test date or enough methodology to interpret it as a universal response-time measure.
- Griffin preview: Tavus says 48% of participants thought it was a real person. The page does not provide the study date or details needed to assess the result.
- Sparrow benchmark: Tavus describes Sparrow-1 as #1 on TurnBench. The reviewed material does not supply enough benchmark detail for an independent comparison, and Sparrow-1 is not the current Sparrow-2 label in the model lineup.
These are different kinds of measurements—rendering latency, a preference comparison, perception freshness, a perception study, and a benchmark ranking. They are not interchangeable proof that a particular CVI deployment will feel human-like or respond within a particular time.
Do you need a webcam to make a Tavus replica?
No, not for every creation path. Tavus previously described video capture for creating a custom replica. In a May 14, 2026 announcement, it said a replica could also be created from a single image and that image-trained replicas could be used as CVI personas. A webcam is therefore relevant to a video-recording workflow, not a universal Tavus requirement. See Tavus’s Image-to-Replica announcement for the company’s description of that option.
