EURO 2024 was the first UEFA European Championship to use a connected official match ball. Its sensor sent ball-movement and touch data to video match officials in real time, helping VAR establish when a touch occurred and supporting semi-automated offside technology. It did not make decisions on its own: the referee remained the final decision-maker. The trade-off is that a precise sensor reading can speed up a review without making the decision any easier for viewers to understand.

What was the smart ball used at EURO 2024?

The match ball was adidas FUSSBALLLIEBE, unveiled by UEFA and adidas on 15 November 2023 as the official EURO 2024 ball. It included adidas Connected Ball Technology, which sent ball data to video match officials. The ball also used adidas’s CTR-CORE, designed to support shape and air-retention consistency. UEFA’s announcement describes the ball and its technology.

For the semi-finals and final, adidas introduced the FUSSBALLLIEBE FINALE edition on 7 July 2024. adidas described it as the first UEFA European Championship final ball with Connected Ball Technology and said it could measure speed, spin and distance. It was a tournament ball edition, not evidence that every consumer version sold in shops included the officiating sensor. adidas’s announcement lists retail and adidas.com as sales channels.

How does the connected ball work?

An embedded inertial measurement sensor records the ball’s acceleration and movement. FIFA says the sensor captures data 500 times per second, helping officials establish the precise moment of ball contact. UEFA says the ball transmitted data to video match officials in real time. That contact timing can help resolve whether and when the ball was touched, including during close offside or handball reviews. FIFA’s Connected Ball Technology explainer describes the sensor; UEFA’s EURO 2024 technology explainer describes its role in match officiating.

The sensor is one input in a larger officiating system, not an autonomous referee. For semi-automated offside, UEFA’s system also used player-position data, AI and 10 specialised cameras tracking 29 body points per player. VAR operators and the on-field officials remained part of the process. The ball can help identify the kick point; it does not independently decide whether a player is offside under the Laws of the Game.

What did it change for VAR—and what did it not change?

With ordinary video alone, officials may need to inspect several angles to work out exactly when a pass or deflection occurred. Ball-contact data can narrow that timing question and help VAR resolve individual touches more quickly, including in handball and penalty incidents. For semi-automated offside, knowing the moment of the kick helps align the ball event with player-position data.

That is a specific improvement to the evidence available, not a replacement for judgment. Offside decisions depend on player position and the relevant law; handball decisions involve context beyond whether the ball touched an arm. A sensor can supply a precise contact event without explaining by itself how the full incident should be judged.

Why can a more precise signal make a decision feel less clear?

The central tension is transparency. A sensor may detect a touch or establish its timing even when a broadcast angle does not make that moment obvious. Viewers who cannot see the contact may find it difficult to understand why officials treated it as decisive. The technology can therefore make one part of the evidence more precise while leaving the overall explanation opaque.

  • Timed Score Challenge: Each soccer match lasts 100 seconds, and the LCD screen shows a countdown and tracks the score. Every time the front button touches the ball, 1 point is deducted and the robot will pause for 1 second to give kids a moment to reset. After the third touch, the game ends early. However, if they make it past 100 seconds, a new round starts automatically. It's an endless challenge mode — who can last the longest?
  • Solo Practice & Multiplayer Competition: Whether you're looking for a way for your child to practice soccer skills alone indoors or find a fun toy the whole family can play together, this soccer bot has you covered. There's no need to worry about the weather, anytime, anywhere, whenever kids want, they can start a soccer game.

This is a criticism of how decisions are communicated and understood, not proof that the sensor failed. UEFA and FIFA’s public explanations describe the system and its role, but the official sources cited here do not provide a tournament-wide independent error-rate study, raw sensor data for public audit, or a sourced list of EURO 2024 controversies attributable to the connected ball. It would be unsupported to say the sensor was demonstrably wrong, that it decided a match by itself, or that it reduced errors by a particular percentage.

Does the referee still make the final decision?

Yes. UEFA states that the referee makes the final decision. The connected ball provides information to the video match officials; it does not issue a binding ruling or replace the on-field referee. The distinction matters: precision about when the ball was touched is useful evidence, but the officials still have to apply the relevant laws and reach the decision.

How does connected-ball officiating compare with video alone?

Aspect Connected-ball system Video review without ball-contact data
Contact timing Sensor data can provide precise timing and identify individual touches for VAR. Officials infer timing from available video angles.
Review speed Contact data can help resolve some incidents faster; no tournament-wide time saving is published in the cited sources. Timing can require reviewing video angles; no comparative tournament-wide figure is published in the cited sources.
What the evidence answers Movement and contact timing support the review; they do not determine how the laws apply. Video shows the incident from available angles; officials interpret it under the laws.
Transparency to viewers A sensor-detected touch may not be visible in the broadcast angle, leaving the reason for a decision hard to follow. Viewers can see the reviewed footage, though camera views may not settle every detail.
Final authority The referee makes the final decision, with VAR support. The referee makes the final decision, with VAR support.
Published independent performance data No tournament-wide independent error-rate study or raw sensor dataset is established by the cited official sources. No comparative independent performance rate is established by the cited official sources.

What should fans take away?

  • The connected ball gave VAR real-time movement and contact data; FIFA describes sensor sampling at 500 captures per second.
  • That data supported contact timing and semi-automated offside, alongside cameras, player tracking, AI, VAR operators and the referee.
  • It could make a factual detail easier to establish without making the whole decision more visible or intuitive to viewers.
  • The referee retained final authority, and the cited official material does not establish an independent tournament-wide accuracy rate.
