Its week-long program combined technical learning, an extensive exhibition, professional networking, student activities, and a new summit connecting hard-tech startups with investors and manufacturers.
What was IMS 2025?
IMS 2025 brought together researchers, engineers, students, industry professionals, and exhibitors working in radio frequency (RF) and microwave technology. In their welcome to the official program, General Chair Steven Rosenau and General Co-Chair Jay Banwait described it as “an unparalleled platform for learning, networking, and collaboration.” The event was co-located with RFIC and ARFTG, giving attendees access to related programming during the same week. Where and when was it held?
The symposium took place in San Francisco, California, from Sunday, 15 June, through Friday, 20 June 2025. Programming was spread across the week: workshops and boot camps began Sunday, RFIC opened the technical week, and IMS formally opened Monday, 16 June, with the Industry Showcase followed by the plenary session. The exhibition ran from the morning of Tuesday, 17 June, until the afternoon of Thursday, 19 June.
What could attendees learn at IMS 2025?
Workshops, boot camps, and technical sessions
Sunday’s workshops and boot camps were intended for participants seeking to follow industry trends or refresh their microwave fundamentals. The rest of the program brought together technical symposia and plenaries with industry-oriented activities, creating routes to explore both research and its practical applications. The event’s closing IMS presentation was titled “Next Generation Networking in the Data Center.”

Topics connecting research and applications
Thematic areas included Systems and Applications; Aerospace and Security; Chips for Critical Infrastructure; and Emerging Technologies, Innovations, and Entrepreneurship. The Future G Summit and industry initiatives, including the Industry Showcase and Best Industry Paper Award, connected technical work with commercial and practical concerns. Presentations on the exhibition floor, including the MicroApps Theater, offered another way to encounter technology and its applications.
How did IMS 2025 support networking?
Networking was built into the schedule rather than left solely to chance conversations on the exhibition floor. Receptions served Women in Microwaves, young professionals, amateur-radio enthusiasts, and MTT-S journal reviewers. Student competitions and events added opportunities for students and early-career participants to meet peers and professionals. The MTT-S Awards Banquet was scheduled for Wednesday, 18 June, and required registration.

For people interested in commercialization as well as technical exchange, the new Hard Tech Venture Summit was designed to connect hard-tech startup founders with investors and manufacturers. A nearby Hard Tech Pavilion supplemented the StartUp Pavilion and MicroApps Theater as a space for showcasing work and making connections.
Who exhibited, and how large was the exhibition?
The exhibition involved more than 550 participating companies and occupied more than 100,100 square feet in Halls A through E of San Francisco’s Moscone Convention Center, according to the 2025 event book. The official welcome characterized IMS as the world’s largest gathering of the RF and microwave community; that description is the organizers’ characterization. IEEE IMS 2025
Rank #3
The scale made the exhibition a major part of the event, while the Industry Showcase and MicroApps Theater provided additional industry-facing ways to encounter technologies and applications. The schedule placed the exhibition between Tuesday morning and Thursday afternoon.
What was the Hard Tech Venture Summit?
The Hard Tech Venture Summit was a new 2025 program initiative focused on connecting hard-tech startup founders with investors and manufacturers. It was part of a broader startup and commercialization presence that also included the Hard Tech Pavilion and StartUp Pavilion. In practical terms, it gave attendees interested in entrepreneurship and investment a distinct networking route alongside the technical program and exhibition.
How to think about IMS 2025 as an event
IMS 2025 combined several kinds of value in one week. Attendees could approach it through technical depth in workshops, symposia, and plenaries; practical exposure to companies through the exhibition, Industry Showcase, and MicroApps Theater; career and community connections through receptions and student events; or commercialization connections through the venture summit and startup spaces. Which aspect mattered most depended on an attendee’s role and goals.

After the closing IMS presentation on next-generation networking in the data center, the program continued on 20 June with the 105th ARFTG Microwave Measurement Symposium. ARFTG’s appearance at the end of the week reflected the event’s co-located structure: IMS programming concluded, while the related measurement symposium provided a further technical gathering.
