The AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT remains a capable 1080p and 1440p graphics card for games that rely mainly on traditional rendering, and its 12GB of VRAM is a useful advantage. It makes the most sense when its price is clearly below newer alternatives; ray tracing and a small price gap can make an Nvidia or newer AMD card the better buy.

RX 6700 XT specifications and launch context

AMD’s product specifications list 40 compute units, 12GB of GDDR6 memory, a 2,424 MHz game frequency, up to a 2,581 MHz boost frequency, and 40 ray accelerators. AMD gives March 1, 2021 as the launch date and $479 as the official launch price. That MSRP is historical context, not a sensible current target by itself. AMD’s RX 6700 XT specifications

The card also has 96MB of Infinity Cache, according to Tom’s Hardware’s launch review. Its 12GB memory capacity gives it more VRAM than many cards in its original performance class, but capacity alone does not guarantee faster performance in every game.

How well does it perform at 1080p and 1440p?

Tom’s Hardware found the RX 6700 XT delivered good 1080p and 1440p performance in its launch review. In that publication’s test suite, it was 26% faster than the RX 5700 XT and more than 40% faster than the RTX 2060 Super. These are results from that review’s specific games and test setup, not a promise of the same advantage in every title or system. Tom’s Hardware RX 6700 XT launch review

For a gaming PC aimed at 1440p, the combination of rasterization performance and 12GB of GDDR6 makes the card a reasonable option if the games you play suit it and the price is right. Check recent benchmarks for the specific games and resolution you care about; performance varies by title, settings, and system.

RX 6700 XT vs. RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 3070

In traditional rasterized gaming, Tom’s Hardware concluded that the RX 6700 XT was faster than the RTX 3060 Ti and close to the RTX 3070 in its 2021 comparison. That conclusion does not extend automatically to ray tracing or every game. Tom’s Hardware’s 2021 comparison

Ray tracing is a key distinction: games that lean heavily on it more often favor Nvidia, so compare results with ray tracing enabled in the games you actually play. If ray tracing is a priority, don’t choose based on rasterization rankings alone.

RX 6700 XT vs. newer AMD cards

Tom’s Hardware reports that the RX 6750 XT is about 7% faster than the RX 6700 XT, while the RX 7700 XT has a larger performance lead. The precise advantage in a game depends on its settings and test conditions. Tom’s Hardware’s later RX 6700 XT comparison

When comparing prices, include the whole purchase rather than just a headline listing. A newer card that costs slightly more may offer better performance or a more favorable warranty situation, while a substantial discount on the 6700 XT can make its remaining rasterization performance worthwhile. Tom’s Hardware reported a least-expensive RX 6700 XT price of $279 in its 2024 article snapshot and said the card was being phased out. That is a dated snapshot, not a current quote or guarantee of availability.

Should you buy a used RX 6700 XT?

A used card can be attractive if its lower price compensates for its condition and warranty risk. Before paying, compare the total price with newer alternatives and check the specific board-partner model: cooler design, noise, size, clock settings, power connectors, and warranty can differ between cards carrying the same GPU.

Who should choose the RX 6700 XT?

It is a stronger fit for buyers seeking discounted 1080p or 1440p rasterization performance and who value 12GB of VRAM. It is a less compelling choice when a newer card is close in price or when ray-tracing performance is central to the decision. Tom’s Hardware’s launch assessment similarly framed it as appealing to buyers who did not prioritize ray tracing. Tom’s Hardware review
