The unit’s chips were intended to analyze image and video data in applications such as automotive smart cameras, IP surveillance and mobile devices—not merely handle conventional multimedia playback.
What did MtekVision spin out?
MtekVision, a South Korean fabless chip maker, separated its Canadian IC design unit to form CogniVue Corp. A report dated October 13, 2009, described the spinout; CogniVue later said the separate Canadian corporation launched on January 1, 2010. Contemporaneous report · CogniVue announcement
What CogniVue made
CogniVue described its specialty as “programmable image cognition processors (ICPs).” These processors were designed for real-time analysis of images and video in embedded systems, where visual data has to be interpreted close to the device rather than sent elsewhere for processing.
Processor families and supporting technology
The Canadian unit had developed three generations of Maple multimedia processors: Maple-2, Maple-3 and Maple-3X. It also used an Apex DSP Sub-System for video and image processing. Separately, MtekVision was promoting the MV8762, a 350-MHz Arm9 application processor. The available reporting does not establish that the MV8762 was itself one of CogniVue’s image-cognition processors.

- Equipped with Xtensa 32-bit LX7 dual-core processor, up to 240MHz main frequency
- Built-in 512KB Static RAM and 384KB ROM, with onboard 8MB PSRAM and 16MB Flash
- Integrated 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE dual-mode wireless communication with outstanding RF performance
- Dual-microphone array with noise reduction and echo cancellation for high-quality speech interaction
- SPI / QSPI LCD display interface. 24PIN DVP camera interface. Adapting USB, I2C, and UART interfaces
The distinction in CogniVue’s positioning was the workload: embedded image and video analytics, rather than only conventional multimedia processing. The contemporaneous report reproduces a company claim that “The advantage of Apex over traditional DSP is power and speed.” That is a product claim, not an independently verified benchmark; the cited sources provide no comparable performance tests, power figures or process-node details.
Intended applications
CogniVue initially targeted automotive smart cameras, IP video surveillance and mobile devices. Its 2011 announcement later described use of its processors and embedded software toolkits in advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and consumer-device gesture recognition.

Was the spinout commercially successful?
CogniVue’s July 26, 2011 announcement reported more than 10 design-ins and over $50 million in sales revenue over three years. These are company-reported figures from that announcement, not independently audited results. The report also said its processors and software toolkits were being used in ADAS and gesture-recognition applications. CogniVue’s 2011 announcement
Those reported design-ins and revenues indicate commercial activity, but they do not establish long-term financial performance, market share or a quantitative advantage over competing processors. The cited material does not support a competitor ranking.

What MtekVision does now
MtekVision’s current corporate materials describe work in automotive cameras and driver monitoring, image-recognition semiconductors for AI or machine vision, image signal processors (ISPs), multimedia application processors and customized ODM research and development. The company also lists car-driving recorders and digital tachographs. Its English corporate page says it has supplied more than 400 million ICs used in mobile and automotive cameras; that total is company-reported. There is no responsible Amazon product recommendation for this story. The cited material describes enterprise chip design-ins, processor IP and OEM applications, not consumer retail products. It does not identify Amazon listings for CogniVue’s processors, Maple-2/3/3X, the MV8762 or related evaluation hardware. A generic camera or unrelated development board would not be a substitute for these chips.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Based on 1MP monochrome (black&white) global shutter sensor OV9281, assembled with a 70°(H) low distortion M12 lens without IR pass filter, sensitive to IR.
- Global Shutter: Shoot high-speed moving objects in crisp sharp images. Avoid the rolling artifacts to get a much more accurate complete picture than the rolling shutter cameras. Reserved external trigger ports, support trigger via external signal.
- Resolution: 1MP 1280H x 800V; Frame Rates: MJPG 100fps@1280 x 800/800 x 600/640 x 480/320 x 240; YUY2 10fps@1280 x 800/1280 x 720. Note: Please change the default frame rate of the software to meet your higher frame rate requirement.
- Plug&Play: UVC-compliant, just connect the camera to PC computer, laptop, Android device or Raspberry Pi with the USB cable without extra drivers to be installed.
- Applications: The sensor's excellent low-light sensitivity and the low distortion lens allow it to perform better in any application that needs gesture and eye tracking, iris and physiognomy recognition, depth and motion detection.
