For a thriller that comes with an author’s vote of confidence, these eight recommendations offer very different kinds of suspense: a stolen novel idea, an old murder revived by a podcast, an isolated family under threat, and a prison escape with a race-against-time premise. The endorsements below are reported by Game Rant; they have not been independently verified against the authors’ original statements, so treat them as attributed recommendations rather than confirmed quotations.

Eight thriller recommendations from fellow authors

This is a varied reading list, not a ranked or scored contest. Choose by the kind of suspense you want: psychological, gothic, comic, family-centered, or driven by crime and pursuit.

1. The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz — reported recommendation from Stephen King

A professor takes the premise of a dead student’s novel and turns it into a successful book. Then someone appears to know where the story came from. Game Rant reports that King praised it as “one of the best novels I’ve ever read about writers and writing,” and described its suspense as “through the roof.” It is the pick for a story about literary ambition, plagiarism, and the cost of a secret.

2. Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera — reported recommendation from Stephen King

Lucy is found covered in her best friend’s blood, with no memory of what happened. Years later, a true-crime podcast revisits the case and brings Lucy back into its orbit. Game Rant attributes to King praise for the book as a “world-class whodunnit” and for Lucy as “terrific, feisty, and funny.” The premise suits readers who like a murder mystery shaped by public suspicion and podcast storytelling.

3. Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney — reported recommendation from Harlan Coben

An estranged family gathers on an island off the coast of Cornwall, where members begin dying one by one. The isolated setting and family secrets make this the choice for readers drawn to a closed-circle mystery. Game Rant reports Coben praised its “delicious twists and secrets.”

4. The Lost Man by Jane Harper — reported recommendation from Liane Moriarty

Two brothers try to understand how their sibling died in the Queensland outback. The remote landscape and strained family ties place this firmly in the atmospheric, family-centered suspense lane. Game Rant reports that Moriarty “absolutely loved” the novel and “devoured it in a day.”

5. The Witch Elm (also titled The Wych Elm) by Tana French — reported recommendation from Gillian Flynn

Toby returns to his family home, where a human skull is discovered inside a wych elm tree. The unsettling discovery opens into a psychological mystery rooted in family history and uncertainty. Game Rant reports Flynn praised French as a “truly great writer.”

6. My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite — reported recommendation from Karin Slaughter

Korede, a nurse, repeatedly protects her younger sister Ayoola, who kills men and leaves Korede to help clean up. Its darkly comic, satirical crime premise offers a sharp contrast to the list’s more conventional mysteries. Game Rant reports Slaughter called Braithwaite an “amazingly fresh voice.”

7. The Collective by Alison Gaylin — reported recommendation from Harlan Coben

A grieving mother joins a group of women who pursue vigilante revenge for crimes against their children. This is the list’s choice for readers interested in the moral tension of revenge as well as suspense. Game Rant reports Coben described it as “gripping, suspenseful, and dark,” and praised its ending.

8. Life or Death by Michael Robotham — reported recommendation from Stephen King

Audie Palmer escapes prison shortly before his release after serving ten years for armed robbery. Police, federal agents, and criminals pursue him as he tries to save a life. The premise makes this the clearest man-on-the-run crime thriller here. Game Rant attributes to King the description “a nerve-shredding thriller with the heart and soul so often missing from lesser crime and suspense novels,” along with praise for Robotham’s writing.

What the endorsements do—and do not—tell you

The recommendations and praise summarized here are reported in a Game Rant article. The original statements were not independently confirmed against primary records, so the wording should not be treated as verified direct quotations. The list also provides no consistent scoring method or evidence-based ranking; its value is the range of premises and the attributed authors’ enthusiasm, not a claim that these are objectively the eight best thrillers.
