You can connect an external hard drive or SSD to an iPhone or Android phone, provided the phone has the right connector and, on Android, supports USB OTG. The drive also needs a file system and partition layout the phone can read, and a hard drive may need its own power source or a powered USB hub.
What you need before connecting a drive
- A matching connector: Use a cable or adapter that fits your phone’s USB-C or Lightning port. Android phones with Micro-USB need a compatible OTG adapter.
- USB OTG support on Android: The phone must support USB On-The-Go to access attached USB storage. Check your phone maker’s specifications if you are unsure.
- A compatible format and partition layout: The phone’s operating system must be able to read the drive’s file system. Apple requires a single data partition for external storage; format support varies by phone and operating system.
- Enough power: A portable SSD or flash drive may work directly, but a conventional hard drive can draw more power than a phone supplies. Use external power or a powered hub if the drive does not appear or keeps disconnecting.
Apple lists APFS, encrypted APFS, macOS Extended (HFS+), exFAT, FAT32 and FAT for iPhone external storage. See Apple’s instructions for connecting external storage to iPhone. Xiaomi’s OTG guidance specifies FAT32 and a single partition for its example; compatibility can vary by phone. See Xiaomi’s OTG guidance.
Connect an external hard drive to an Android phone
- Confirm that your phone supports USB OTG. Get a USB-C or Micro-USB OTG adapter if the drive’s connector does not fit the phone.
- Connect the drive to the adapter, then connect the adapter to the phone.
- Open Files by Google. When the USB storage notification appears, tap it and then tap Allow.
- Browse to Storage devices to open the drive. Files by Google lets you browse and manage files on USB storage. Google’s instructions cover Android 7.0 and newer: Browse files on a USB device with Files by Google.
If no notification appears, open Files by Google and look for the drive under Storage devices. If it remains unavailable, check OTG support, the adapter, the drive’s format and power needs.
Connect an external hard drive to an iPhone
iPhone with USB-C
- Connect the drive to the iPhone’s USB-C port using a suitable cable or adapter.
- If a bus-powered hard drive does not appear, connect it through a powered USB hub.
- Open Files, tap Browse, and select the drive under Locations.
iPhone with Lightning
- Connect the drive using Apple’s Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter or a compatible equivalent.
- If the drive needs more power, connect a USB power adapter to the adapter’s power input.
- Open Files, tap Browse, and select the drive under Locations.
Apple says Files and other supported apps can access files on external devices connected to an iPhone. Its support page also explains the supported file systems and power options: Connect external storage devices to iPhone.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Why your phone may not detect the drive
- The adapter or connector is wrong: Match the adapter to the phone’s port and the drive’s cable. Remove a thick case if it prevents the connector from seating fully.
- Android OTG is unsupported: USB storage may not work without OTG capability, even when the adapter fits.
- The drive needs more power: Try a powered USB hub with a USB-C iPhone, or connect power through the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter. A spinning hard disk is more likely to need extra power than a lower-power portable SSD.
- The format or partition layout is incompatible: Check that the drive uses a file system supported by the phone and has an appropriate partition layout. Apple requires one data partition; Xiaomi’s OTG example calls for one FAT32 partition. Do not reformat the drive until you have backed up files, because formatting can erase data.
- The specific drive has limited phone support: Compatibility can vary by model and app. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact drive. SanDisk’s product guidance shows that app and Files support differ among its phone-drive and portable SSD models: iXpand support and portable SSD support.
- The connection is unstable: If a hard drive repeatedly disconnects, try external power or a lower-power portable SSD or phone-oriented drive.
Choose a drive that fits your phone and use
Before buying, check the phone connector, whether an adapter is needed, the drive’s power requirements, and whether its file system works with the phone. Also consider portability and how much storage you need. A conventional hard disk, portable SSD and dual-connector phone drive can all connect in suitable setups, but they differ in power needs and convenience. The cited compatibility guidance does not establish a universal speed or reliability ranking, so choose based on the manufacturer’s specifications for the particular model.
