On October 1, 2026, protesters in Madrid banged pots, pans and other household objects to urge Spain’s Congress to approve proposed housing measures. The cacerolada at Plaza de Cibeles was one visible tactic in a wider renter mobilization that also included marches and encampments—not a description of every housing protest across Spain.
What happened at the cacerolada?
A cacerolada is a noisy demonstration in which participants strike pots, pans or other household objects. At Madrid’s Plaza de Cibeles on October 1, demonstrators also used whistles, cups and keys as they called on parties in Congress to ratify the government’s housing decrees. Europa Press reported that the government delegation estimated attendance at up to 2,000 people; this was an attributed estimate, not an independently verified count. Europa Press also reported similar actions outside other large-city town halls, including Barcelona. Europa Press’s report on the Madrid protest.
The pot banging drew attention, but it was only one form of protest. Renters also organized marches, demonstrations and encampments in Madrid and other cities.
Why did renters mobilize?
The immediate catalyst was the eviction of 87-year-old María del Carmen Abascal from her Madrid home on September 23, 2026. She had lived there for more than seven decades. The eviction was filmed and widely discussed, sharpening public anger about tenant security and the cost of housing. Hundreds camped in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol, with demonstrations and encampments also appearing elsewhere. The Associated Press report on Abascal and the protests.

What did protesters and unions want?
Organizers called for stronger safeguards against eviction, stable or automatically renewed rental contracts, and action against speculation and unaffordable housing. These were movement demands; they should not be confused with the full contents of the government’s proposed decrees.

| Indicator | Figure and reference period |
|---|---|
| Average national home price | €2,230 per square metre at the end of 2025, up 13.1% year on year, according to the Government of Spain’s State Housing Plan 2026–2030. |
| Rent burden | 26.8% of households renting at market rates spent more than 40% of income on rent, according to the plan citing Eurostat’s latest 2025 data; the plan gives the European average as about 19%. |
| Average age of emancipation | 30 years in Spain in 2024, compared with 26.2 years for the European Union, as reported in the plan. |
| Estimated structural housing deficit | More than 400,000 homes, an estimate attributed to the Bank of Spain by the Government of Spain’s plan. |
The plan’s diagnosis points to several interacting pressures: insufficient supply, population and household growth, an aging housing stock, and homes used for purposes such as tourism, vacancy, seasonal rentals and room rentals. These are the government plan’s stated factors in the policy context, not proof that any one factor alone caused the crisis or the demonstrations. Government of Spain, State Housing Plan 2026–2030.
