The Samsung Galaxy S23 is a compact 2023 flagship that improves a familiar Galaxy formula with a faster Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chip, a larger 3,900mAh battery and a refined design. Its 6.1-inch 120Hz display and useful 3x optical telephoto make it a strong fit for people who want flagship performance in a phone that is easier to hold than the Plus or Ultra. Its main compromises are modest battery capacity and 25W wired charging.
What is new about the Galaxy S23?
The S23 is an incremental upgrade, not a reinvention. Its most meaningful changes are the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, a 3,900mAh battery, an updated 12MP front camera and a cleaner camera-housing design. That approach suits buyers who value polish over a radically different phone. The S23 keeps a compact screen, flagship materials and a three-camera rear system, while the Ultra remains the option for a much larger display and more ambitious camera hardware.
Design and display: compact without feeling basic
Samsung specifies a flat 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with FHD+ resolution, 425 pixels per inch and an adaptive 48–120Hz refresh rate. It lists an outdoor peak brightness of 1,750 nits. The high refresh rate makes scrolling and supported animations look smooth; the relatively small screen is the more consequential choice if you often watch video or work across apps.

The phone weighs 168g and uses Armor Aluminum with Gorilla Glass Victus 2. Those materials give it a premium feel, but glass is still vulnerable to drops, so a case is sensible. Samsung’s specifications are available on its US Galaxy S23 specifications page.
Performance and storage
The S23 uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, an octa-core chip Samsung lists at up to 3.36GHz. Samsung specifies 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage, depending on market and configuration. TechRadar described the Galaxy-tuned chip as a slightly faster variant in its 2023 review. Is 128GB or 256GB the better choice?
Choose 128GB if you keep most media in cloud storage, stream rather than download, and do not record much high-resolution video. The 256GB model is the safer long-term pick if you shoot lots of 4K or 8K footage or prefer to keep files on the phone. Samsung’s US specification sheet lists no external-memory support, so you cannot add a microSD card later.
How good are the Galaxy S23 cameras?
The rear camera system has a 50MP wide camera with optical image stabilization, a 12MP ultrawide and a 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom. The front camera is 12MP. Battery life and charging
Samsung rates the battery at 3,900mAh and wired charging at up to 25W when used with a 25W adapter and USB-C cable. The phone also supports Samsung Fast Wireless Charging 2.0 and Wireless PowerShare. A compatible adapter is needed for wired charging at the stated maximum; check whether one is included with the specific regional package you are buying.
The capacity is an improvement over the previous generation, but it remains a compromise of the compact size. The S23 is the compact member of the range. The useful distinction is not simply that the other models are larger: bigger models are aimed at buyers who are willing to trade easy one-hand handling for a larger display, more battery capacity or more advanced camera hardware. Check Samsung’s specifications for the exact regional model before purchase, and compare current local prices rather than relying on launch pricing.

Is the Galaxy S23 still worth buying?
It can be, if a compact Android phone with flagship performance, a smooth OLED display and a real 3x optical camera is what you want. The trade is clear: you get an easier-to-hold phone, not the largest battery or the Ultra’s camera system. Because the S23 launched in 2023, its present-day value depends on the price and condition of the particular unit, its regional model, warranty and remaining software support. Those details can change and should be checked with the seller and Samsung before purchase.
