NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope captured the sharpest infrared view yet of Earendel, a distant bright point in the Sunrise Arc. NASA described it as the most distant star ever detected, but a 2025 study’s revised estimate of the gravitational lens magnification raises a serious question: whether the source is a single star at all.

What Webb’s image shows

Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) sees Earendel as a single unresolved point of light within the Sunrise Arc, a stretched galaxy. That point-like appearance constrains how large the source appears in the image; it does not, by itself, establish whether the source is one star, a small multiple-star system, or a compact star cluster.

Earendel is also known as WHL0137-LS. It lies behind the massive foreground galaxy cluster WHL0137-08, which bends and magnifies light from objects farther away. NASA and ESA presented Webb’s 2023 observation as the strongest detailed view of the candidate yet. The image is credited to NASA, ESA and CSA, with science contributions including Dan Coe and Brian Welch and image processing by Zoltan Levay.

How far away is Earendel?

NASA reported that Earendel’s light traveled 12.9 billion years to reach us. The source is observed at redshift 6.2, from a time when the universe was about 7% of its current age, according to NASA’s 2022 account of the Hubble discovery.

That 12.9-billion-year figure is a reported light-travel time, not a measurement of Earendel’s present-day distance. Because the universe has expanded while the light was traveling, “how long the light traveled” and “how far away the source is now” are different questions. The widely used “most distant” description refers to the great look-back time and high redshift of the detected source.

Why can a telescope see one star so far away?

The foreground cluster acts as a lens

WHL0137-08’s gravity distorts spacetime and magnifies light from the Sunrise Arc behind it. Earendel lies near a lensing caustic, a region where the lens model predicts especially strong magnification. This natural lens is why light from such a remote and intrinsically small source could become detectable.

The Sunrise Arc’s long, distorted shape and its repeated or mirrored features are also effects of gravitational lensing. They are not the ordinary appearance of an undistorted galaxy.

Webb observes the light in infrared

As the universe expands, light from this early epoch is shifted toward longer wavelengths. Webb’s infrared-sensitive NIRCam observed the target through filters centered at 0.9, 1.15, 1.5, 2.0, 2.77, 3.56, 4.1 and 4.44 micrometres. Those observations provided a more detailed infrared view than Hubble’s original discovery image.

What the magnification estimates say

The magnification is central to the debate because it affects how astronomers infer the source’s intrinsic brightness and what kind of object could produce it. The estimates below come from different lens models, so they should not be read as measurements made under identical assumptions.

Account or analysis Reported magnification What it means for Earendel
NASA and ESA, 2023 Webb follow-up At least 4,000× The earlier interpretation used extreme lensing to explain how a single star could be detectable at this distance.
Scofield, Jee, Cha and Park, 2025 strong- and weak-lensing analysis μ = 43–67 The substantially lower estimate calls the classification as a single star into question.

The 2025 study rebuilt the WHL0137-08 lens model using JWST strong- and weak-lensing constraints. Its estimate is far below the earlier range of 4,000–35,000 cited in that study. A lower magnification means less of the observed brightness is attributed to lensing, changing the inferred intrinsic properties of the source. It therefore makes the single-star interpretation harder to sustain under that model; it does not make the Webb image disappear or settle the object’s identity on its own.

Is Earendel a star or a compact cluster?

NASA’s 2023 interpretation describes Earendel as a massive B-type star, more than twice as hot as the Sun and about one million times as luminous. That physical picture depends on treating the unresolved point as a star and on the lensing interpretation used to infer its intrinsic properties.

The alternative raised by the 2025 magnification analysis is that Earendel could be a compact stellar system rather than one star. Webb’s image resolves the source as a point, but an unresolved point can contain multiple objects too close together for the observation to distinguish. On the evidence described by NASA, ESA and the 2025 study, “Earendel candidate” is the cautious label; the single-star identification remains contested rather than definitively overturned.

How Hubble and Webb contributed different evidence

Hubble discovered Earendel in the Sunrise Arc, establishing the extraordinary high-redshift source and prompting the “most distant star” description. Webb followed up with NIRCam infrared observations, showing the source as an unresolved point and adding data at longer wavelengths. The sharper follow-up improved the observational picture, while the later revision of the lens model changed how some researchers interpret what the point represents.

As NASA quoted lead author Brian Welch explaining, Earendel’s age makes it valuable for studying stars from an era whose raw materials may have differed from those of nearby stars. But resolving its nature depends not only on the image: the foreground cluster’s lens model is part of the chain from observed light to claims about intrinsic luminosity and object type.

What else Webb found in the Sunrise Arc

The arc contains other structures that help illustrate why a point in the image need not be interpreted in isolation. NASA and ESA estimated that a star-forming region in the arc was less than 5 million years old, while an older bound star cluster was at least 10 million years old. These are estimates for features in the arc, not for Earendel itself.
