The ransomware group Pandora claimed it stole 1.4 terabytes of data, but that figure was an attacker allegation, not an independently verified measurement.
What happened in the Denso ransomware incident?
Japanese automotive supplier Denso said it detected unauthorized access to its German network on March 10, 2022. According to SecurityWeek’s March 14, 2022 report, the company disconnected network connections for compromised devices as it contained the incident.
Pandora, a cybercrime group, claimed responsibility. The attackers published a file list and images of documents as purported proof. SecurityWeek reported that the list appeared to cover tens of thousands of documents, spreadsheets, presentations and images, with references to customers and employees. Those materials were presented by the attackers; their publication does not independently verify the full scope or authenticity of any alleged theft.
How much data did Pandora say it stole?
Pandora alleged that it had stolen 1.4 TB of Denso data. SecurityWeek reported the claim, and ENISA’s transport threat landscape also summarized it. The figure should be understood as the group’s claim: the cited reporting does not establish that Denso or an independent forensic investigation confirmed that amount.

Did the attack stop Denso’s car production?
No production interruption was reported at the time. Denso said its production activities were not disrupted and that its plants continued operating normally while it disconnected compromised devices. This describes the immediate operational effect reported by the company; it does not establish what happened to production at any later date.
Who was behind the attack, and was it linked to Rook?
Pandora claimed responsibility. Researchers cited by SecurityWeek suspected that Pandora was a rebranding of the Rook ransomware operation, but this was an assessment, not a definitive attribution.

Denso had also appeared on Rook’s leak website in December 2021, when the group made an earlier claim involving 1.1 TB of data. That earlier theft claim was not confirmed by Denso. It is distinct from Pandora’s later 1.4 TB allegation and should not be treated as confirmation of either claim.
A March 2022 Hivepro advisory described Pandora as a ransomware gang targeting automotive, manufacturing, technology and finance organizations, and listed Germany, Japan and the United States among its target locations. That characterization provides context about the group’s reported targeting; it does not by itself prove who conducted the Denso intrusion.

Why does a contained incident still matter to automotive suppliers?
Keeping factories operating limits immediate disruption, but it does not eliminate the potential consequences of data exposure. Automotive suppliers handle information connected to engineering, customers and employees. If such material is taken, the risk may extend beyond the affected company to its business relationships, even when production continues.
Shane Curran, CEO of Irish encryption firm Evervault, told SecurityWeek that manufacturers should secure sensitive data as well as their networks. That distinction is relevant here: network controls can help prevent or contain access, while protecting data itself can reduce the value of information if attackers reach it.
