Network World reported in 2023 that HPE Aruba planned to prioritize data-center switching, private 5G and SASE because enterprise customers were focused on those technologies. Product announcements through April 2025 show how HPE began building out that direction, though they do not establish the company’s roadmap in 2026.
What Aruba’s three priorities mean
The priorities address different parts of an enterprise network rather than competing for the same job. SASE brings network access and security controls together for users and sites. Private 5G provides cellular connectivity for places where coverage, mobility or dedicated access requirements make Wi-Fi alone insufficient. Data-center networking connects and protects the systems running enterprise applications and workloads.
Together, they point to a strategy that spans remote users, campuses and industrial locations, and the data centers that host applications. That is a useful way to understand the 2023 priority list, not evidence that every customer needs all three technologies.
How Aruba’s SASE approach handles access
HPE Aruba’s validated design combines Aruba SD-Branch or Microbranch with Aruba SSE. For internet and SaaS traffic, SSE can apply Secure Web Gateway controls such as web-content filtering, threat-intelligence protection, file scanning, sandboxing and data-loss prevention. For private applications hosted in a VPC or data center, access can be governed by ZTNA policies over IPsec tunnels.

Aruba’s SASE is therefore an integration of network and security services, not a single appliance. HPE’s April 2025 announcement described tighter integration between EdgeConnect SD-WAN and SSE, alongside adaptive DDoS defense, universal ZTNA/NAC controls and resilient mesh routing among SSE points of presence.
When SSE-led access may be enough
An SSE-led design suits organizations whose main need is centralized security and ZTNA for users reaching internet, SaaS and private applications. In HPE Aruba’s validated design, SD-Branch or Microbranch can connect users and sites to SSE without requiring a full SD-WAN overlay for every traffic flow.

When to retain SD-WAN
A full SASE design that includes SD-WAN is more relevant when branches need direct branch-to-branch connectivity, deterministic quality of service, or support for legacy application flows. HPE’s design allows enterprises to retain an SD-WAN overlay for those requirements while using SSE for security services; whether that is necessary depends on traffic patterns and application needs.
What Aruba Enterprise Private 5G includes
HPE launched Enterprise Private 5G on June 3, 2024, combining Athonet mobile-core technology with HPE enterprise networking. HPE describes it as a turnkey system built from a 4G/5G core, HPE ProLiant Gen11 servers, SIM or eSIM cards, 4G/5G small cells and a dashboard. The company says it supports U.S. CBRS shared spectrum and other regulatory frameworks where allowed, with zero-touch provisioning and configuration wizards.

HPE stated that deployment could take under 30 minutes. That is the vendor’s stated deployment time, not an independently validated end-to-end installation benchmark; site readiness, spectrum authorization and deployment scope still matter. HPE also reported that Athonet had completed 500 enterprise private-cellular deployments before the integration.
Where private 5G can complement Wi-Fi
HPE positions private 5G for manufacturing, healthcare, public venues, education, utilities, airports, ports, transportation, government and other large or remote sites. The fit is strongest where an organization needs outdoor reach, connectivity for fast-moving devices, or deterministic access in dedicated spectrum. That does not make private 5G categorically better than Wi-Fi: the appropriate choice depends on coverage, mobility, device support, spectrum and application requirements.

Why data-center networking is part of the strategy
Network World reported in 2023 that HPE Aruba CEO Phil Mottram described an aggressive plan to grow data-center networking, with particular attention to the Aruba CX 10000. The report characterized the CX 10000 as a top-of-rack Layer 2/3 switch with an integrated Pensando data-processing unit (DPU) for low-latency traffic, security and load-balancing functions. Network World cited switching capacity of 3.6 Tbps; that is the figure in its 2023 report, not an independent comparative test.
HPE Aruba’s validated data-center design guide describes broader operating goals: high throughput, zero-downtime upgrades, converged storage networking, flexible segmentation, third-party integration, pay-as-you-grow elasticity, workload mobility, standards-based overlays and network automation. The underlying challenge is maintaining stability and visibility as compute and storage move between on-premises and public-cloud environments.

How the strategy developed after the 2023 report
- June 2024: HPE launched Enterprise Private 5G, packaging Athonet mobile-core technology with HPE servers, SIM/eSIMs, small cells and management.
- August 2024: Aruba Central added behavioral-analytics network detection and response (NDR), plus ZTNA for campus and data-center environments.
- April 2025: HPE announced tighter EdgeConnect-SSE integration, adaptive DDoS defense and resilient SSE mesh connectivity.
These releases show portfolio steps that connect the stated priorities: private cellular for site connectivity, security and access controls extending into campus and data-center environments, and a defined data-center switching focus. They do not, by themselves, confirm HPE Aruba’s priorities or product packaging after April 2025.
