Apache fixed CVE-2023-34468 in NiFi 1.22.0. The flaw affects releases 0.0.2 through 1.21.0 and can let an authenticated, authorized user execute custom code by configuring a database URL that uses the H2 driver in a DBCPConnectionPool or HikariCPConnectionPool controller service. Organizations should upgrade affected instances, restrict who can configure those services, and investigate unexpected configuration changes.

What is CVE-2023-34468?

CVE-2023-34468 is a code-injection vulnerability in Apache NiFi’s DBCPConnectionPool and HikariCPConnectionPool controller services. Apache’s 2023 security advisory says an authenticated and authorized user could configure a database URL using the H2 driver, enabling custom code execution. This is a serious risk, but it is not an unauthenticated flaw: the attack path requires access and permission to configure a database service.

Apache rated the issue’s affected range as NiFi 0.0.2 through 1.21.0 and fixed it in 1.22.0. The fix validates database URLs and disables H2 JDBC URLs in the default configuration.

Is Apache NiFi 1.21 vulnerable?

Yes. NiFi 1.21.0 is within the affected range identified by Apache. The affected versions and stated fix are:

NiFi version CVE-2023-34468 status
0.0.2 through 1.21.0 Affected, according to Apache’s advisory
1.22.0 Fix introduced; H2 JDBC URLs disabled by default

Apache’s advisory establishes 1.22.0 as the first fixed release. For a production system, upgrade to a currently supported NiFi release where operationally possible rather than treating the historical minimum fixed version as a recommendation for a new deployment.

Can hackers exploit Apache NiFi remotely, and does it require authentication?

The vulnerability can be exploited through NiFi’s configuration path, but the documented exploit requires an authenticated, authorized user who can configure the relevant database controller service. ExceptionFactory’s independent analysis likewise notes that the workflow requires an authenticated bearer token and authorization. Internet reachability by itself does not remove those prerequisites.

In September 2023, SecurityWeek reported that Cyfirma described CVE-2023-34468 as CVSS 8.8, noted a public exploit tool, and estimated about 2,700 NiFi instances were exposed to the internet across sectors including finance, government, healthcare, and telecommunications. That figure is a historical Cyfirma estimate reported at the time, not a current count. The cited reporting does not establish widespread malicious exploitation, and the estimate should not be read as a measure of vulnerable or compromised systems today.

How should organizations patch the NiFi H2 vulnerability?

  1. Inventory instances: Identify every Apache NiFi deployment and record its exact version, including systems that are internet-accessible or managed by another team.
  2. Upgrade affected releases: Upgrade any instance below 1.22.0. Prefer a currently supported release when operationally feasible, and plan downtime, backups, and rollback in line with your organization’s change process.
  3. Check configuration controls: Confirm that H2 JDBC URLs are rejected and that only trusted administrators can change DBCPConnectionPool or HikariCPConnectionPool controller-service settings. Apache states that the 1.22.0 fix disables H2 JDBC URLs in the default configuration.
  4. Review audit records: Look for unexpected controller-service changes or database URL modifications, especially changes made by accounts that should not have that configuration authority.
  5. Respond to suspected compromise: As operational incident-response guidance, isolate the affected instance, preserve logs, rotate credentials and keys that may have been exposed, and follow your incident-response procedures if unauthorized configuration or code execution is suspected.

What the reported exposure means for defenders

The 2023 report is a reason to verify inventory and access controls, not evidence that a particular NiFi deployment was attacked. The risk depends on the version and on whether an attacker can obtain an account with the authority to configure the affected service. Patching addresses the vulnerable behavior; limiting configuration privileges and reviewing audit logs help reduce and investigate abuse of that access path.
