A DIY persistence-of-vision (PoV) display turns live depth-camera data into a monochrome, pseudo-3D image. An Azure Kinect DK captures a point cloud; a computer converts it into frames at 30 FPS and sends them wirelessly to an ESP32, which controls LEDs on a rotating custom circuit board.
How the display turns a live scene into a 3D effect
The project combines depth capture, computer processing and a spinning LED array. The camera measures a scene as a three-dimensional point cloud rather than supplying only an ordinary flat image. A computer processes that data into display frames at 30 FPS, then transmits the frames wirelessly to an ESP32 mounted in the rotating assembly.
As the board spins, the ESP32 flashes the LEDs at positions timed to the rotation. The flashes appear to form a stable image because of persistence of vision: the visual effect created when rapidly presented light patterns are perceived as continuous.
How depth is represented
The display is monochrome, so it does not use color to distinguish points at different depths. Instead, brightness modulation conveys depth. Coordinating brightness and LED timing while the board rotates adds control demands beyond simply lighting a fixed pattern.

Is it a true hologram?
No. It creates a hologram-like, pseudo-3D visual effect using rotating LEDs and visual persistence; the project description does not establish that it produces a true optical hologram. The 3D quality comes from live depth-camera data rendered through the spinning display, not from stationary holographic optics.
