The Acqiris TC840, sold in the Acqiris catalog as the U1050A, is a 12-channel CompactPCI time-to-digital converter (TDC) that supports single-start and multistart acquisition. Depending on the ordered variant, its timing resolution is 50 ps or 5 ps; its specified event span reaches up to 20 seconds between the first and last events.
What the Acqiris TC840/U1050A does
A TDC records the timing of input events relative to a timing reference. The Acqiris TC840 is described by its datasheet as a “12 channel, single stop, time-to-digital converter (TDC) with single start and multistart acquisition modes.” That description is from the Acqiris TC840 datasheet hosted by ArtisanTG, not an independent performance test.
The TC840 is listed as the U1050A in the Acqiris product catalog. It is a CompactPCI instrument intended for laboratory and experimental timing work, including particle-accelerator timing, nuclear-fusion studies, and sub-critical or explosive testing. It is not a general-purpose consumer timer.

Resolution is not interchangeable across all U1050A units: check the suffix on the exact unit or its documentation before planning around 5 ps versus 50 ps. Likewise, the 20-second figure describes the first-to-last-event span; it does not by itself specify trigger thresholds, input polarity, channel mapping, or timing behavior in a particular experiment.

Do not treat “multistart” and “multihit” as interchangeable labels or infer that the U1051A is simply a lower-channel U1050A. Compare the exact acquisition semantics, resolution, event span, host requirements, and software support for the models under consideration.

Availability and checks before buying
Acqiris Japan’s support catalog marks the U1050A/TC840 as discontinued and notes limited remaining stock. That status does not establish that a unit is currently available for sale: availability may depend on specialist distributors or used-test-equipment sellers, so confirm directly with the seller.
- Identify the exact configuration. Request a clear model and suffix, serial number, and documentation for the unit; confirm whether it is the 50 ps U1050A-001 or 5 ps U1050A-002 if timing resolution matters.
- Check the condition. Ask for a serial-number-specific condition report and confirm what is included. Establish whether calibration records are available and whether calibration or service can be obtained for that unit.
- Confirm host compatibility. Verify that your CompactPCI chassis and controller support the instrument and that the physical installation matches your setup.
- Verify software support. Ask which driver and SDK version are supplied and confirm they work with the intended host computer and operating environment before purchase.
- Match the signal and clock setup. Check trigger polarity, input threshold behavior, channel mapping, and whether your experiment requires the internal clock or an external 10 MHz reference.
- Validate acquisition behavior against the manual. Confirm that the model’s start/stop behavior and readout match the experiment, especially if it depends on multistart timing or the full specified event span.
The official Keysight TC-series manual is the reference for operation; the Acqiris Japan catalog and FAQ provide model and lifecycle information. For the precise capabilities of a used instrument, rely on its suffix, serial-specific documentation, and seller-confirmed condition rather than assuming all units or listings are equivalent.
