Gmail’s AI summaries and Gemini in Gmail serve different jobs. Use AI Inbox to spot priorities, an AI Overview to understand a long thread or get an answer from search results, and the Gemini side panel when you want to ask a question or request a task such as finding a detail, drafting a reply, or listing action items. Which options appear depends on your plan, account, language, region, and device.
Which Gmail AI feature should you use?
| What you want to do | Use | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Decide what to catch up on | AI Inbox | Highlights inbox priorities and topics. |
| Understand one long conversation | AI Overview conversation summary | Summarizes a thread’s key points and replies. |
| Answer a question across matching emails | AI Overview in Gmail search | Shows a concise summary or answer above search results after a natural-language query. |
| Ask for a custom answer or action | Gemini side panel | Responds to prompts to find information, summarize, draft or refine email, suggest replies, and help with certain Calendar tasks. |
| Preview an eligible message in the inbox on Android | Short message summary | Displays a brief, thread-based summary below the subject. |
These are documented purposes, not a measured ranking of accuracy or speed. Google distinguishes the experiences in its Gmail AI feature overview, Gemini in Gmail Help, and Workspace with Gemini guide.
What AI Inbox and AI Overview summaries do
AI Inbox: find priorities
AI Inbox reviews your inbox to surface priorities and topics that can help you catch up. It is aimed at triage: deciding what to read or handle, rather than composing a response. Google’s current feature table lists it for Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra in English in the US, on web, iOS, and Android. Availability can change, so check the feature row for your account and location in Google’s feature overview.
AI Overview: understand a conversation
When you open a long email thread, an AI Overview can condense the conversation into key points and replies. Google lists conversation summaries in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish, across web, iOS, and Android, for eligible Google AI or Workspace plans; personal Gmail accounts are also listed as available. That does not mean every account or region necessarily has the feature.

AI Overview: get an answer from search
Gmail search can show a concise AI summary or answer above results when you ask a question in natural language. This is for synthesizing emails surfaced by a search, rather than summarizing a single open conversation. Google lists eligible Google AI and Workspace plans, English, and web, iOS, and Android for this feature; consult the current plan row because eligibility may change.
What Gemini in Gmail adds
Gemini is the prompted assistant experience. Instead of only presenting a predefined summary, you can describe what you need in the side panel. Google’s examples include:

- “Show my unread emails.”
- “Find emails from [person] sent last week.”
- “Summarize this email” or “Catch me up on [project] emails.”
Gemini can also help draft or refine messages, suggest replies, and look up Calendar details or create events. The Gmail Help page says access requires an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan; it also describes a personal-account route through Workspace Experiments. The Workspace Learning Center provides additional examples.
Short message summaries and summary cards are different
Short message summaries
Gmail has a separate inbox preview feature for eligible messages in the Android app. Google says the summaries can be up to two lines, appear below the subject, draw on the thread, and update when new information arrives. Google lists the latest Gmail Android app and an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan as requirements. See Google’s instructions for short message summaries.

Gmail also creates email-derived cards for items such as orders, events, travel, bills, and promotions. These are ordinary Gmail summary cards, not Gemini AI Inbox or AI Overview summaries. Google describes them separately in Use summary cards in Gmail.
Do you need a paid Google plan?
There is no single Gmail AI requirement. Google’s feature matrix varies by feature, and access can depend on plan, account type, language, country, and device. AI Inbox, conversation summaries, search overviews, the Gemini side panel, and Android message previews have distinct eligibility details. Some features may be available to personal Gmail users, while others require an eligible Google AI or Workspace plan or, for personal accounts, Workspace Experiments. Check the exact feature in Google’s current Gmail AI feature table and the Gemini access information before changing plans.

- Choose the job first. For inbox triage, look for AI Inbox. For a thread recap, open the conversation and use its AI Overview. For a question across emails, use natural-language Gmail search. For a tailored request, open Gemini and prompt it directly.
- Check your access. If an option is missing, verify the feature’s plan, account, language, country, device, and settings requirements in Google’s feature overview and Gmail Help.
- Confirm important details in the original email. Google warns that Gemini suggestions can be inaccurate or inappropriate. Before replying or acting, check dates, prices, names, commitments, and who owns an action against the thread itself. Google says not to rely on Gemini suggestions as medical, legal, financial, or other professional advice; see its accuracy guidance.
Google’s documentation describes feature purposes and access, but does not establish comparative accuracy or speed results. Treat a summary as a way to navigate email, not as a substitute for checking consequential details.
