NDDS 4.0 was Real-Time Innovations’ implementation of the Object Management Group’s Data Distribution Service (DDS) model—not the OMG standard itself. RTI’s September 2005 NDDS 4.0 Architectural Overview describes DDS as configurable, high-performance publish-subscribe networking and identifies NDDS 4.0 as RTI’s implementation.
How NDDS 4.0 relates to OMG DDS
DDS is a middleware standard: it defines a data-centric way for software components to exchange information. NDDS 4.0 was RTI’s product implementing that model. The distinction is like the difference between a standard and a particular software implementation of it: the standard describes the model and interfaces, while an implementation supplies software that applications can use.
The 2005 RTI overview names flexibility, performance, and reliability as NDDS 4.0’s three broad design goals. Those are goals stated by RTI, not independent benchmark results.
How DDS publish-subscribe works
DDS organizes communication around shared data rather than requiring applications to make direct point-to-point calls to one another. In OMG’s description, applications read and write named data objects in a global data space. Publishers make data available, and subscribers receive the data they are interested in through the DDS model.

- AD9851: 0-70MHz Square Wave: 0-1MHz
- AD9851 Clock frequency up to 180MHz, AD9851 has 6 octave
- AD9851 DDS Signal Generator Module 0-70MHz 2 Sine Wave and 2 Square Wave
- Parallel and serial data input can be selected via a jumper
This approach can let distributed components exchange data without each component needing a direct connection to every other component. DDS’s QoS model allows an application or system designer to express communication requirements such as reliability, delivery deadlines, bandwidth behavior, and resource limits. The requirements are expressed through policy settings; the exact configuration depends on the system and the implementation.
That combination makes DDS relevant to embedded and distributed real-time systems, including areas such as robotics, industrial systems, defense, and transportation. Relevance does not establish that a particular product or deployment is used in any one of those fields.

Which DDS version does NDDS 4.0 use?
The available historical account establishes that NDDS 4.0 implemented the OMG DDS model, but it does not identify a specific OMG specification version number for NDDS 4.0. Avoid treating “NDDS 4.0” as another name for “DDS 1.4”: those numbers refer to different things, and the evidence does not establish that mapping.
The OMG’s formal DDS specification is version 1.4, adopted in March 2015. The OMG specification page provides the normative PDF along with machine-readable IDL documents for DCPS and DLRL. That formal record is later than RTI’s September 2005 NDDS 4.0 overview.

- The module can output sine waves and square waves, 2 sine waves and 2 square waves. AD9850: 0-40MHz; AD9851: 0-70MHz; after the frequency is 20-30MHz, the harmonics become larger and larger, and the waveform becomes increasingly unclean. Square wave: 0-1MHz.
- Adopt 70MHz low-pass filter to make the SN ratio of the waveform better.
- The pin (PIN12) that generates the DA reference is leads out to facilitate the amplitude adjustment application of the output waveform.
- The reference input voltage of the comparator is generated by a variable resistor. Adjusting the resistor can obtain different duty cycle square waves.
- The AD9850 module uses a 125MHz active crystal oscillator, and the AD9851 module uses a 30MHZ active crystal oscillator.
DDS is a family of related standards
The OMG catalog lists standards related to the core DDS specification. Their names, versions, and catalog dates are not interchangeable with an RTI product version:
| OMG standard | Version | Catalog date |
|---|---|---|
| Data Distribution Service (DDS) | 1.4 | Adopted March 2015 |
| DDS Interoperability Wire Protocol (DDSI-RTPS) | 2.5 | April 2022 |
| DDS Security | 1.2 | February 2026 |
| DDS for eXtremely Resource Constrained Environments (DDS-XRCE) | 1.0 | February 2020 |
| DDS with Time-Sensitive Networking (DDS-TSN) | 1.0 | September 2026 |
These entries describe separate standards in the DDS ecosystem. A catalog listing does not, by itself, establish which of them a particular implementation supports or how that support is delivered.

What RTI Connext means in this context
RTI’s current product overview presents Connext as a software implementation of DDS. RTI’s release documentation describes its API as an extension of the OMG DDS API and says it aims to preserve API compatibility while conforming to OMG changes. This means Connext is a product line built around the standard, not a replacement name for the standard itself.
When comparing Connext with another DDS implementation, check the specific product versions and documentation rather than inferring equivalence from the DDS label alone. Useful comparison points include:

Is NDDS 4.0 still supported?
The historical NDDS 4.0 overview and the current DDS specification record do not establish NDDS 4.0’s present support status. A standards version’s continued existence does not prove that a particular old product release still receives maintenance. For a deployment decision, confirm the status directly with RTI and check the support terms for the exact NDDS release, platform, and maintenance agreement.
