Yes—some AMD Ryzen systems could boot VMware ESXi 6.5 and run virtual machines, but the documented results were hardware-specific homelab workarounds, not proof of VMware support or production stability. In a 2017 test, disabling SMT got ESXi past a PSOD, while the test author reported a 30% or greater performance reduction. NIC, storage-controller, BIOS, and passthrough compatibility could still prevent a usable system.

What “working” meant for Ryzen and ESXi 6.5

For these reports, “working” meant ESXi could be installed or booted on a selected Ryzen build and used to run VMs. It did not mean that every Ryzen motherboard worked, that the configuration was certified, or that the host was suitable for dependable production use.

Patrick Kennedy’s April 8, 2017 ServeTheHome test concluded: “Just because something can be installed that does not mean it is ready for stable operation.” That distinction matters: ESXi compatibility depends on the whole platform, not just the processor model.

Documented Ryzen examples

Report Hardware and changes What the report establishes
ServeTheHome, April 8, 2017 Ryzen 7 1700X; ASUS Prime B350-Plus; 64 GB G.Skill DDR4; Intel SSDs; Intel XL710-QDA2 dual-port 40GbE adapter. SMT was disabled to get past the PSOD. ESXi 6.5 could be made to run in this test configuration. The onboard Realtek NIC was not suitable, and the author reported a 30% or greater performance reduction from disabling SMT.
Broadcom community discussion, July 15, 2019 Ryzen 5 3400G; ASRock DeskMini A300; custom net-r8168 and sata-xahci drivers added. The contributor reported a home-lab or small-environment setup. The built-in Realtek NIC and consumer SATA controller were not detected without the added drivers; the discussion also describes unstable passthrough and loss of host USB access.

These are examples, not a universal recipe. A different board, firmware revision, ESXi build, controller, or driver combination may behave differently.

Did Ryzen require SMT to be disabled?

In the ServeTheHome Ryzen 7 1700X test, disabling simultaneous multithreading (SMT) was the workaround for getting past a PSOD. Kennedy reported that disabling SMT would cause “a 30% (or more) digression in performance.” Treat that figure as the impact reported for that 2017 test, not as a benchmark for every Ryzen CPU or workload.

That report does not establish that all Ryzen systems require SMT-off, nor that switching it off will fix a different host’s boot failure. The motherboard BIOS also had to provide an SMT-off option; BIOS support was itself a constraint in the test.

Why ESXi may report that no network adapters were detected

ESXi needs a driver for the network adapter it sees. In the ServeTheHome build, the onboard Realtek adapter was not a suitable supported NIC for that installation, so the test used an Intel XL710-QDA2 adapter. A Ryzen processor does not make an onboard adapter compatible.

  • Check the exact onboard NIC model and whether the specific ESXi 6.5 build has a usable driver for it.
  • If it does not, a compatible add-in NIC—such as the Intel adapter used in the 2017 test—or a properly injected driver may be needed.
  • Do not assume that adding a driver solves every issue: the Broadcom community build required a custom net-r8168 driver, and its storage controller also needed separate driver work.

If the installer sees no network adapter, the host may still install, but remote management and network access to VMs will remain unavailable until a compatible NIC and driver are in place.

Storage, BIOS, and passthrough are separate compatibility questions

Storage controllers

A consumer SATA controller may not be detected by the ESXi build even when the CPU and motherboard boot successfully. In the Broadcom community report, the Ryzen 5 3400G system used a custom sata-xahci driver because its consumer SATA controller was not detected. That report does not show that the driver is appropriate for other controllers or systems.

BIOS and virtualization features

Firmware affects whether the needed settings are available and how the platform behaves. The 2017 workaround depended on a BIOS option to disable SMT. For device passthrough, VMware’s vSphere 6.5 documentation describes hardware-assisted I/O MMU virtualization as VT-d on Intel processors and AMD-Vi or IOMMU on AMD processors. Having an IOMMU setting does not, by itself, establish that a particular device or passthrough configuration is supported or stable.

Passthrough behavior

The Broadcom community discussion reports that USB passthrough could leave the host without keyboard access and that passthrough was not stable in that setup. Treat passthrough as a configuration-specific risk, not a feature guaranteed by a successful ESXi installation.

How to assess a Ryzen ESXi 6.5 build before relying on it

  1. Check certification for the exact platform. Consult the Broadcom Hardware Compatibility Guide for the precise system and components. A community success report is not a substitute for an entry covering your configuration.
  2. Inventory the motherboard’s devices. Identify the exact NIC and storage controller rather than relying on the board or chipset name alone.
  3. Confirm driver availability for the ESXi 6.5 build. If a driver must be injected, verify that it matches the device and intended ESXi build; do not assume the custom drivers used by another build will apply.
  4. Review BIOS options and test boot behavior. Confirm whether the firmware exposes the settings your plan requires, including SMT and IOMMU, and test changes on the actual board.
  5. Test the workload and recovery path. Exercise networking, storage, and any intended passthrough devices, and make sure you can regain local or remote host access if a device stops responding.
  6. Choose the platform for the consequence of failure. The cited reports support experimentation in selected home-lab or small environments; they do not establish Ryzen consumer builds as a dependable production platform.

Ryzen homelab versus a supported server platform

The practical difference is not simply AMD versus Intel. It is whether the complete platform has the support, management, and predictable device behavior your workload requires.

Decision factor What to verify on a Ryzen consumer build Why it matters
Hardware compatibility Whether the exact platform and components appear in the Broadcom Hardware Compatibility Guide A successful community installation does not establish official support.
NIC and storage drivers Driver availability for the particular NIC and storage controller under the intended ESXi 6.5 build Undetected networking or storage can leave an installed host unusable.
SMT and virtualization features Whether the firmware exposes the required controls and whether the resulting behavior suits the workload The documented SMT-off workaround carried a reported performance cost; IOMMU availability alone does not prove passthrough stability.
Remote management Whether the system provides IPMI or iKVM, or another reliable way to recover a host The 2017 article warns that Ryzen consumer systems lacked IPMI/iKVM, making remote recovery less convenient than on many server platforms.
Passthrough Whether each intended device works without losing host access or causing lockups The community report describes unstable passthrough and lost USB keyboard access.
Workload Whether the host is for experimentation or must support production services and a cluster The reports show selected lab use, not verified production readiness.

Verdict

AMD Ryzen could run ESXi 6.5 in selected, tuned homelab configurations, but the evidence is bounded to particular builds and workarounds. The early Ryzen 7 test needed SMT disabled and a separate Intel NIC, with a reported performance penalty; another community build needed custom network and storage drivers and still reported passthrough problems. Treat consumer Ryzen success as experimental unless the exact platform is listed as compatible and its devices and recovery requirements are validated for your use.
