A summary can leave out a qualification or present source material that does not clearly support a statement. Google does not publish a Gmail-specific omission rate or wrong-source rate, so verify details that could affect a decision by checking the messages themselves.
First, identify which Gmail summary you are looking at
Google uses several different summary features in Gmail. Their placement and requirements differ, so a missing or incomplete summary does not necessarily mean the same thing in each case.
AI Overview in a conversation
Google describes an AI Overview as a synthesis of key points and replies at the top of a long email thread. It can also suggest reminders for tasks with due dates. Google’s AI Overview help page says it is available to Gmail users globally, requires a supported language, and requires Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet and Smart features in Google Workspace to be enabled. You can hide or minimize an overview, or report an incorrect one using “Bad suggestion.”
Short summaries in the Android inbox
These are different from thread-level AI Overviews. They appear below the subject line of eligible messages, replace the usual preview, and summarize the thread in up to two lines. Google says they update when new information arrives in the conversation. Its Android message-summary help page lists the latest Gmail Android app and an eligible Workspace or Google AI plan as requirements; compact inbox density prevents them from appearing. The page also says smart features are off by default in the European Economic Area, Japan, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Those are rules for this inbox-summary feature, not universal requirements for every Gmail summary.

Summary cards
Gmail summary cards extract information for topics such as orders, events, travel, bills, and promotions. Google says a card may be limited or absent if the email does not contain enough detail. You can see which email a card is based on and submit feedback. These cards are not the same as Gemini-generated thread summaries. See Google’s summary-card help.
Gemini in Gmail’s computer side panel
The Gmail side panel can summarize a thread and find information in earlier emails. Google’s Gemini in Gmail help lists an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan as a requirement. The documentation also describes experimental availability for personal accounts. Availability therefore depends on the particular summary surface, device, account, settings, and eligibility; one requirement should not be assumed to apply to every Gmail summary.

Why an AI summary may leave out an important detail
Summaries compress the thread
A short inbox summary is limited to two lines, so it cannot reproduce every detail of a conversation. Dates, quantities, names, exceptions, conditions, and less prominent replies are especially worth checking in the original thread. Google documents the format, but does not quantify how often information is omitted.
The summary may reflect only part of the information you expect
For summary cards specifically, Google says the card can contain limited information when the source email lacks detail. That explains a limitation of cards; Google does not identify it as the technical cause of every omitted detail in an AI Overview or Gemini thread summary.

Security protections can affect a response
Google says Gemini in Workspace may filter or block a response if it detects possible malicious content or prompt injection. For a Gmail summary request, it may exclude malicious content or decline to respond. Google does not describe this as a routine explanation for ordinary summary omissions. Details are in Google’s prompt-injection protection guidance.
Generated suggestions can be inaccurate
Google warns that Gemini suggestions can be inaccurate or inappropriate. That is a reason to treat a summary as a starting point rather than as confirmation of what someone agreed to. Google provides feedback and response-reporting controls; its Workspace Learning Center gives example requests such as “Summarize this email.” and “Create a list of action items for me based on this email.”
Why a displayed source may not support the summary
Google’s guidance for Gemini in Workspace cautions that source lists are not a guarantee that each listed item directly supports every statement. Gemini might miss a source it used, cite a document not directly used for a particular fact, or in some cases make up a source. Google recommends checking an answer against the listed material and other trusted sources. Read its guidance on Gemini sources.
This is general Workspace source guidance. It does not establish that every Gmail AI Overview displays source links, explain why a particular link appears mismatched, or provide a Gmail-specific rate for wrong-source attribution. In Gmail’s computer side panel, Google documents adding Drive files as sources and viewing contributing sources in supported Workspace experiences. If source controls appear, open the material and check it directly; a source label by itself is not proof that the material backs a claim.
How to check a summary before acting on it
- Open the original conversation. Read the relevant messages, including later replies and quoted context, rather than relying on the summary alone.
- Check the decision-changing facts. Confirm who committed to what, the dates and amounts, any conditions or cancellations, and whether a later message superseded an earlier one.
- Inspect displayed source material. If Gemini shows a source, open it and verify that it directly supports the statement in question.
- Ask a more focused question if useful. In a Gemini experience, you can request specific dates, decisions, or action owners. Google’s examples include “Summarize this email.” and “Create a list of action items for me based on this email.” A more specific response still needs to be checked against the thread.
- Report an error. Use “Bad suggestion” for an incorrect AI Overview, or the response-reporting control available in the Gemini experience you are using.
If a summary is missing, check the feature’s requirements
Before treating an absent summary as a fault, identify its location and check the conditions Google lists for that specific feature:
- For an AI Overview, check supported language and the relevant Gmail and Workspace smart-feature settings.
- For a short Android inbox summary, check that Gmail is up to date, the account is eligible, and inbox density is not set to Compact. In the European Economic Area, Japan, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, Google says smart features for this feature are off by default.
- For Gemini in the computer side panel, check account or plan eligibility and whether the feature is available for your account.
Google’s reviewed documentation does not provide a measured Gmail-specific rate for omitted details or incorrect source attribution. The practical safeguard is to use a summary to find your place in the conversation, then confirm consequential facts in the original messages and any source material actually shown.
