To set up Samsung DeX on a landscape monitor, connect a DeX-compatible Galaxy phone or tablet to the display with a compatible DeX or HDMI cable or adapter, unlock the device, and tap Start when prompted. DeX’s external-display workspace is documented in landscape orientation. If the display mirrors your device instead, switch the connected display to Extend in DeX settings where that option is available.
Before you connect: check device and display compatibility
Confirm that your exact Galaxy model supports wired DeX on an external display. Support varies by model and connection mode, so the Galaxy family name alone is not enough to establish compatibility. Samsung’s support page explains how to manage workspaces in Samsung DeX mode; check current guidance for your model, software version, region, and intended connection type.
Your monitor or TV needs an input that works with the cable or adapter you plan to use. Samsung recommends checking display compatibility and resolution. A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter is one option, but verify that the adapter works with your device rather than assuming every third-party adapter will.
Set up a wired Samsung DeX workspace
- Connect the display. Attach the Galaxy device to the monitor or TV with a compatible DeX or HDMI cable or adapter. Follow the compatibility guidance for both the Galaxy device and the adapter.
- Unlock the device. On first use, a DeX prompt may appear on the phone or tablet. Tap Start to enter Full Desktop mode.
- Open DeX if no prompt appears. Open Quick Settings and tap the DeX icon. Menu wording and availability can vary by device.
- Choose how to control the desktop. You can use the device screen as a touchpad or use its touchscreen or S Pen. A USB or Bluetooth mouse and keyboard are optional.
- Check the external display. DeX’s external workspace is landscape. If you see a copy of the phone or tablet screen instead, use the mirroring steps below to look for the Extend option.
- Adjust fit and legibility if needed. Check the display’s supported resolution and picture or fit settings. In DeX, use screen zoom or font size controls if interface elements are uncomfortable to read.
If the external display mirrors your device
On some Galaxy devices running Android 16 with One UI 8, an external connection may initially mirror the device rather than open an extended DeX desktop. Samsung’s guide says to select Extend in the connected-display settings when available.

- Open Quick Settings, then Settings.
- Go to Connected devices > Samsung DeX > Connected display.
- Select Extend.
The menu wording or option availability may differ by device. See Samsung’s instructions for switching a connected display to Extend.
Make the DeX desktop fit and read comfortably
If the desktop does not fill the monitor or looks distorted, check the monitor’s picture or fit controls and the resolution settings available to your device. Samsung notes that displays whose native resolution is not 1080p may need adjustment; this is troubleshooting guidance, not a guarantee that every display and resolution combination will work.

For small text or interface elements, open Settings > Samsung DeX and adjust Screen zoom or Font size. Some apps may not follow font-size changes. Available display modes and resolutions depend on the Galaxy device and its software.
Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect DeX display
- No DeX desktop appears: Recheck support for your exact model and wired connection mode, then check the cable or adapter and display input. If possible, try another display. Resolution compatibility may also matter.
- The picture is cut off or stretched: Check the monitor’s picture or fit settings and the resolution options available in DeX. A display’s native resolution can affect the result.
- Text is too small: Adjust Screen zoom or Font size under Settings > Samsung DeX. Some apps may not reflect the font-size setting.
- You are following PC-connection advice: Do not assume restrictions for DeX on PC determine whether a separate monitor or TV connection works. Compatibility depends on the exact Galaxy model and connection mode; check guidance for external-display DeX.
Wired or wireless DeX?
Wired and wireless DeX are different connection paths, not a universal performance ranking. A cable or adapter creates a direct physical connection, but it must be compatible with the Galaxy device and the display’s input. Wireless DeX avoids that cable path but requires a compatible display and supported device behavior. Samsung documents both approaches in its DeX setup guidance; check compatibility for your specific device and display before choosing.
