To model a passive electric guitar in SPICE, represent the pickup with winding resistance and inductance plus parasitic capacitance, then include the volume and tone controls, cable capacitance, and amplifier or interface input impedance. Use measured values where possible: generic pickup numbers are starting points, not universal specifications. A simple lumped RLC model is usually suitable for checking steady-state frequency response; transient or pickup-virtualization work may need a more detailed model.

What the guitar model needs to include

A pickup does not drive an amplifier in isolation. Its response depends on the electrical load connected to it, including the controls, cable, and input receiving the signal. A useful signal-chain abstraction is:

Pickup coil → tone circuit → volume divider → cable capacitance → amplifier or interface input

Represent the pickup as an induced signal with winding resistance and inductance, and include parasitic capacitance across its output. The winding resistance represents loss in the coil; the inductance and capacitances interact with the connected load to shape resonance. The tone and volume controls alter that loading, so leaving them out can produce a response that does not match the complete guitar.

Keep the cable and input load in the circuit

At audio frequencies, an instrument cable can be approximated as a capacitance in a first-pass lumped model. Connect that capacitance at the guitar output and include the amplifier or interface input impedance at the receiving end. Cable capacitance and input impedance are part of the loaded instrument response, not optional details to add only after modeling the pickup.

Choose values without treating examples as specifications

An open example model documented by ColtonKoop uses the following approximate values. They illustrate a representative single-coil setup; they do not define all single-coil pickups, cables, or amplifier inputs.

Element Example value How to interpret it
Pickup inductance Approximately 2 H Starting value in the cited representative single-coil model, not a universal pickup specification.
Pickup DC resistance Approximately 7 kΩ Starting winding-resistance value in that model; measure the pickup being modeled when accuracy matters.
Pickup capacitance Approximately 100 pF Example parasitic capacitance in that model, not a guaranteed value for other pickups.
Cable capacitance Approximately 30 pF/ft Example cable value; use the capacitance specification or a measurement for the cable in the setup.
Amplifier input 1 MΩ An example amplifier input impedance, not a universal input load.

These example parameters come from repository documentation for an open model. The available citation does not establish them as population averages or as the values of a particular commercial guitar. In particular, do not infer that every pickup has the same inductance or capacitance just because its DC resistance is similar.

Measure the pickup and the complete setup

Measured impedance data are a better basis for a model than generic values. An LCR meter can provide useful winding and capacitance measurements; an impedance-measurement setup can show how the response changes across frequency. The measurement article associated with this topic compares DCR, Ls, Cp, and Rp readings with frequency-response plots and evaluates equivalent circuits in LTspice. Macalister Electronics also describes deriving equivalent-circuit values from measured guitar output impedance and approximating an open guitar cable as a capacitor at audio frequencies.

  1. Record the pickup’s DC resistance. Measure the pickup winding and note which pickup and instrument configuration is connected.
  2. Measure frequency-dependent impedance or LCR values. Record the meter or setup, measurement frequency, and reported quantities, such as series inductance (Ls), parallel capacitance (Cp), and parallel resistance (Rp). Values can depend on measurement conditions, so retain those conditions with the results.
  3. Document the loaded instrument configuration. Note tone and volume settings, cable type or capacitance, and amplifier or interface input impedance. If the goal is to match a real guitar, measure or document the response with those same parts connected.
  4. Enter the parameters in LTspice or another SPICE-compatible simulator. Start with a lumped pickup model and the measured or specified loads rather than adding unmeasured elements.
  5. Run an AC sweep and compare it with a measurement. Compare magnitude and, when available, phase across frequency for the same pickup, controls, cable, and input load.
  6. Adjust only identifiable parameters. Change a value when the measurement can constrain it; otherwise, multiple combinations of component values may fit the same observed response. Keep the measured conditions and chosen parameters with the model.

Use an AC sweep to check resonance and response

An AC sweep is the useful first check for steady-state frequency response: it shows the magnitude and phase as frequency changes, making resonance and loading effects easier to compare with an impedance or output-response measurement. The pickup inductance and effective capacitance contribute to the resonant behavior; cable capacitance adds to the load seen by the pickup. The familiar estimate f ≈ 1/(2π√(LC)) can help explain how inductance and capacitance affect a resonance, but it is not a complete prediction for a loaded guitar. The controls, cable, input impedance, and losses influence the actual response and damping.

For a meaningful comparison, simulate and measure the same configuration. A response measured with one cable and control setting is not a direct validation target for a model using a different cable or load. If magnitude agrees but phase or resonance shape does not, do not compensate by arbitrarily changing several parameters: first check whether the model includes the relevant load and whether the measured quantities can identify the parameter you want to change.

Choose model complexity for the question

A more elaborate circuit is not automatically a better model. Select a model based on what it must reproduce and whether the added parameters can be measured or identified.

Model approach Useful for Limit or trade-off
Lumped RLC with controls and load First-pass simulation and comparison of steady-state frequency response. Simple and interpretable, but may not reproduce every transient feature.
Model with additional loss or distributed elements Cases where measured response or transient behavior calls for more detail than a basic lumped circuit captures. Requires additional defensible parameters and greater implementation effort.
Nonlinear pickup-system model Pickup-system virtualization or work that needs to represent nonlinear behavior and the wider control, cable, and interface system. More complex than a basic frequency-response model; not necessary for every design question.

Research on distributed inter-winding capacitance reports that simple RLC models do not capture all pickup transient features and proposes a more detailed electromagnetic treatment. A Politecnico di Milano study derives direct and inverse nonlinear pickup-system circuit models that include tone and volume controls, cable capacitance, and interface input impedance for pickup virtualization. These approaches address higher-fidelity goals; they are not evidence that every pickup simulation needs a distributed or nonlinear model.

Validate the model against the real guitar

Validation means comparing like with like, not merely finding a plausible-looking resonance peak. Keep a record of the measurement frequency range, pickup, control positions, cable, and receiving input load. Compare simulated and measured magnitude and phase where available. If the match is poor, verify the setup and loading assumptions before increasing model order; additional components only help when the data support them.

  • For a design or resonance check: begin with measured pickup values, controls, cable capacitance, and input impedance, then use an AC sweep.
  • For transient accuracy: test whether the lumped model reproduces the measured transient behavior; consider distributed capacitance or a more detailed treatment if it does not.
  • For virtualization: use a model aimed at reproducing the pickup system, including controls and external loading, and account for nonlinear behavior where required.
