Start with the receipt or transaction history: the company that billed you is usually the first place to request a refund. Submit the request through that store’s official process as soon as practical, and don’t assume that “accidental” means it will be approved. Rules can differ by country, store, and purchase type—and buying an item with in-game currency may be treated differently from paying real money.

Before you request a refund

  1. Stop using the purchase and, if relevant, the game. PlayStation’s US policy for in-game consumables makes whether you launched the game after purchase relevant to eligibility. Other stores and items may have different rules.
  2. Find the receipt or transaction history. Check which account made the purchase and identify the billing merchant: for example, Apple, Google Play, PlayStation Store, Nintendo, Steam, or another retailer. A game may offer more than one way to buy items.
  3. Use the merchant’s official refund route. Give the actual reason—an accidental purchase—and provide the account, item, date, amount, and order or transaction reference if the form requests them.
  4. Check the request through that provider. Follow its status page or support instructions. If the request is declined, read the reason and use the provider’s official support or appeal route. Local law may provide rights beyond a store’s stated policy.

If someone you know, such as a family member, made the purchase using your account, describe that accurately. If nobody authorized or recognizes the charge, use the store’s process for reporting an unauthorized transaction instead; those are different situations.

Refund routes by store

Use the route that matches the merchant on your receipt. The policies below are the cited official guidance for the named platform and region; they are not guarantees of approval.

Store or billing route Where to start Important conditions
Apple billing Go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, choose “Request a refund,” select a reason and the app or item, and submit. Apple says some purchases may be eligible, with eligibility varying by country or region. Apple advises allowing 24–48 hours for an update on a request; returning approved funds may take longer. If the charge is missing, check the receipt and Apple Account used. A pending charge cannot yet be requested through this process. Some digital purchases in some regions may be billed by a different merchant, so check the receipt. Apple refund guidance; Apple charge and receipt guidance.
Google Play Use Google Play’s refund request guidance. Within 48 hours, you may be able to request a refund depending on purchase details; that period does not guarantee approval. After 48 hours, Google directs you to contact the developer to troubleshoot and ask whether it can refund under its policy and applicable law. If a friend or family member made the purchase with your account, request a refund as an accidental purchase. If neither you nor anyone you know made the charge, Google says to report it as unauthorized within 120 days. Sharing credentials or failing to protect the account can affect refund eligibility. Google Play guidance on unauthorized charges.
PlayStation Store (US policy) Open Transaction History, select an eligible transaction, choose Request Refund, and follow the instructions. If self-service fails, contact PlayStation Support or use its online assistant. For US in-game consumables, the cited policy requires that the request be within 14 days, the purchase was made in PlayStation Store, and the game has not been launched after purchase. PlayStation explains that launching can deliver items bought outside gameplay; items bought in-game are delivered immediately. A delivered consumable is generally not eligible unless faulty. The policy is US-specific, and applicable local law may provide additional rights. PlayStation Store refund policy.
Nintendo digital purchases (US/Americas) Contact Nintendo Support about your circumstances. Nintendo’s published ordinary US policy says payments are final and non-refundable except where Nintendo authorizes otherwise or applicable law requires it. Its support guidance says, “We are unable to provide refunds or exchanges for mistaken purchases” of downloaded games or DLC. Do not count on a refund under the ordinary policy. Nintendo digital-purchase policy; Nintendo guidance on mistaken purchases.
Steam Sign in to Steam Help, open Purchases, select the purchase and problem, choose “I’d like to request a refund,” and submit the form. Valve’s general rule for a title is to request within 14 days of purchase and have less than two hours of playtime. You can still submit a request outside those rules for review. The cited general title rule does not establish that every in-game transaction follows identical criteria. Steam refunds.

When the publisher—not the store—is relevant

The purchase receipt determines where to start for a real-money transaction, but the game’s support guidance can clarify which party handles the request. Activision, for example, says it does not refund purchases made with in-game currency and directs requests for real-money digital purchases to the retailer. That is Activision’s policy example, not a rule for every publisher. For another game, check its official support page and the merchant shown on the receipt.
