DENTRESSANGLE Capital has completed its acquisition of French ASIC specialist Presto Engineering, according to a later corporate statement. The deal was first announced on 5 July 2024 as exclusive talks; the companies did not disclose the purchase price or a closing date. Presto designs custom chips and manages the work needed to move them from specification into production, coordinating with foundries and outsourced assembly and test providers rather than operating a chip-fabrication plant of its own.

What happened in the Dentressangle–Presto deal?

On 5 July 2024, DENTRESSANGLE Capital announced that it had entered exclusive talks to acquire Presto Engineering. That announcement described a proposed transaction, not a completed one. A later corporate statement said the acquisition had been finalized and identified Garibaldi Participations as a minority co-investor. Presto CEO Cédric Mayor also invested alongside Dentressangle, according to the transaction coverage.

The public statements establish that the acquisition was finalized, but do not give a closing date or the deal’s complete legal structure. Financial terms were not disclosed, so there is no verified purchase price or transaction valuation to report.

What does Presto Engineering do?

Presto provides what it calls a wall-to-wall ASIC service: it can support a customer from chip design through industrialization, production testing, quality and yield management, logistics, and delivery. It coordinates with semiconductor foundries and outsourced assembly and test (OSAT) providers as part of that chain. This makes it a chip-design and production-services partner, not a company publicly described here as owning the fabs that manufacture its customers’ chips.

Why is Dentressangle buying Presto?

Dentressangle presented Presto as a platform for growth and consolidation in Europe’s fragmented ASIC sector. The investment thesis combines rising demand for custom semiconductors—with applications in digitalization, AI, IoT, connected and electrified mobility, industrial automation, and medical equipment—with concern about Europe’s dependence on semiconductor production in Asia. Those are the rationale and market context cited by the transaction announcement, not proof that the acquisition will achieve a particular growth rate or reduce regional dependence by itself.

The stated strategy is to accelerate Presto’s organic growth, expand its ASIC design capability, and pursue additional acquisitions. Dentressangle and Presto described the goal as building a European consolidation platform. Mayor said the investment would help Presto speed up growth and strengthen its position as a European one-stop shop for ASIC services.

What does “ASIC one-stop shop” mean?

An application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) is a chip designed for a particular product or function rather than a general-purpose processor. A one-stop shop in this context means that a customer can use one partner to coordinate multiple stages of the chip’s path to production. With Presto, those stages can include design, industrialization, foundry and OSAT coordination, testing, yield and quality management, and delivery support.

The phrase describes the breadth of services offered; it does not mean Presto necessarily performs every task in-house. Its model includes coordinating external manufacturing and assembly partners. For an OEM, this can provide a single operational point of contact across a complex supply chain, while the chip still gets fabricated and packaged through partner facilities.

How to assess Presto as an ASIC supplier

The acquisition announcement does not establish how Presto compares with any particular competitor. For an OEM evaluating ASIC partners, the useful questions are whether a provider’s engineering expertise, production support, and geography fit the product and supply-chain requirements.

  • Design capability: Confirm experience with the required process technology, circuit architecture, and product constraints.
  • Specialization: Check relevant experience in analogue, mixed-signal, RF, sensors, or cryptographic applications, as appropriate to the design.
  • Production depth: Establish which industrialization, test, yield, and quality activities the provider performs directly and which it coordinates.
  • Manufacturing network: Ask which foundries and OSAT providers can support the design, and what alternatives exist if capacity or supply conditions change.
  • End-to-end responsibility: Clarify who owns handoffs, logistics, and delivery from design specification to production parts.
  • Sector and regional support: Match the supplier’s experience and facilities to the product’s industry, regulatory needs, and required customer support locations.
