The contemporaneous report identifies STIC Ventures as LG-backed; it does not establish that LG Electronics itself bought Bermai shares directly.
What was Bermai?
Founded in 2001, Bermai was a semiconductor startup working on CMOS chips for wireless local area networks (WLANs). Its designs aimed to combine radio-frequency (RF), baseband and media-access-control (MAC) functions, which are often handled by separate components.
In May 2002, EDN reported that Bermai had sampled a single-chip, all-CMOS 5-GHz 802.11a radio integrating those three functions. That is a period report about a sampled chip, not evidence of a product currently available or of later commercial shipments.
Did LG Electronics invest directly in Bermai?
The June 2003 coverage describes the investor as LG Electronics-backed STIC Ventures. That supports a connection through a venture firm backed by LG Electronics, but does not show that LG Electronics itself made a direct corporate investment in Bermai.

How much funding did Bermai raise?
According to EDN’s June 26, 2003 report, the Series B financing added $12 million and brought Bermai’s total equity raised to approximately $34 million. The report frames the funding as support for moving the company from development toward revenue.
What chip was Bermai making?
Bermai’s technical approach was to integrate wireless-radio functions on CMOS silicon. RF handles the radio signal, baseband processes the wireless transmission, and MAC manages access to the network. Combining them was intended to reduce component count, board space and power use while supporting higher data rates and efficiency; these were the technology’s aims as reported at the time, not verified present-day performance results.

The company’s roadmap included products for IEEE 802.11a, 802.11g and combined 802.11a/g networks. The reported May 2002 sample was specifically a 5-GHz 802.11a radio. A roadmap or sample does not, by itself, establish that every planned design reached production.
Why did the 2003 financing matter?
The round was presented as a step toward commercializing the technology. Bermai president and CEO Bruce Sanguinetti said that large customers had begun qualifying the chipsets and expected to use them in wireless-LAN and wireless-multimedia systems. His statement, quoted by EDN on June 26, 2003, describes qualification activity and anticipated use—not confirmed product launches or sales.

What happened to Bermai afterward?
The cited contemporaneous reports establish Bermai’s early development, its sampled 802.11a chip and the 2003 funding round. They do not establish the company’s later acquisition, closure, product shipments or continuing operations, so its eventual outcome cannot be concluded from those reports.
