What does a video game’s base price include?
The base game is the core game product. Its price does not, by itself, establish that expansions, bonus items, premium currency, or later content are included. Labels such as “Standard” or “Deluxe” are not consistent descriptions across publishers, so use the individual listing’s included-content details rather than relying on the edition name.

Xbox Game Studios states that, for its purchased-to-own games, “players will not be required to make additional purchases to play the base game.” That is a policy statement about Xbox Game Studios and purchased-to-own games; it should not be treated as a universal guarantee for every publisher, game, or online feature. How are DLC and expansions different from the base game?
DLC, or downloadable content, is additional content associated with a game. It can take forms such as an expansion, bonus level, or other add-on. Platforms treat add-ons as products distinct from the base game; whether a specific item costs extra or is included in an edition depends on that game’s store listing. What does a bundle or season pass include?
A bundle groups multiple products under one price. It may combine a base game with one or more add-ons, or include multiple games. A season pass is a kind of add-on bundle that can cover content not yet released, with products added later. The term “season pass” alone does not specify which content is covered, when it will arrive, or whether any limits apply. Read the current contents and terms of the particular pass or bundle. What are microtransactions, and are they necessary?
“Microtransaction” is a broad everyday term for a purchase made inside or for a game. It does not identify one kind of item, nor does it mean that every purchase is cosmetic. Examples include virtual currency, skins, emotes, XP boosts, bonus levels, and items consumed during play. Platform categories distinguish repeat-purchase consumables, such as premium currency, from one-time add-ons. How is a subscription different from buying a game?
A subscription is a recurring transaction product, not the same thing as buying a base game or a particular add-on. The subscription’s catalog and access conditions are separate from the standalone game’s price. Does buying digital content mean you own it permanently?
Not necessarily. The FTC explains that access to digital content can depend on an account, platform availability, DRM, or licensing terms. PlayStation’s software terms describe virtual content as licensed for use in the software, and note that some content may require an additional purchase or be time-limited. Check the terms for the platform and item you are buying rather than assuming a digital purchase is a physical object or guarantees perpetual access. What should you compare before paying?
Compare the actual products and terms in the offers, not just their names or headline prices.
- Included content: Check whether the offer contains only the base game or names particular DLC, a season pass, bonus items, or other games.
- Timing: Distinguish content available now from season-pass products expected later.
- Purchase type: Identify one-time add-ons versus consumables that can be purchased repeatedly.
- Platform and access: Verify compatibility, account requirements, DRM, and license terms.
- Total cost: Compare current standalone and bundle listings; the bundle label alone does not establish savings or the eventual cost of all content.
- Refund terms: Check the policy for the item type and platform. Rules can differ, and digital delivery or use may affect cancellation eligibility.
Can DLC or a season pass be refunded?
Refund rules depend on the platform, region, and product category. For example, PlayStation’s US guidance treats games and DLC separately from in-game consumables; its US cancellation policy says cancellation of a season pass can be limited after included content begins downloading or streaming. These are US-specific examples, not universal refund rules. Check the current policy for your region and purchase before ordering.
