Sign in to your ASUS router, open VPN > VPN Client or VPN > VPN Fusion, then deactivate and delete any VPN profile you do not recognize. If VPN Fusion is available, check its device exception rules too: a suspicious rule can route a device through a VPN even when you have dealt with the profile list. ASUS uses different menu names and controls across models and firmware, so consult the manual for your exact router.

Remove the unfamiliar VPN profile

  1. Connect to the router. Join its Wi-Fi network or connect a computer to it with Ethernet. Sign in to the router administration interface using its router address or local IP.
  2. Open the VPN client settings. Look for VPN > VPN Client or VPN > VPN Fusion. ASUS’s setup guidance says the client feature may be called VPN Fusion in newer firmware contexts; the location and labels depend on model and firmware. See ASUS’s VPN Client setup instructions.
  3. Review each profile. Check its name, VPN type, and whether it is active or set as the default connection. Deactivate and delete a profile you cannot identify. If a profile may belong to work, school, or someone else who manages the network, verify it with that person before removing it.
  4. Save and verify. Apply or save the change if the interface offers that control. Confirm the unwanted profile is gone and the intended default connection is Internet.

Check VPN Fusion device exception rules

VPN Fusion can assign individual devices to particular VPN connections. These routing exceptions are separate from the VPN profile itself, so inspect them if VPN Fusion is present.

  1. Open the VPN Fusion exception list or device-rule area.
  2. Look for rules or device assignments you do not recognize.
  3. Deactivate and delete suspicious rules, then select Apply if that control is shown.
  4. Verify that the rule no longer appears and that affected devices use the intended connection.

ASUS’s instructions for the GT-AC5300 and GT-AC2900 describe deactivating and deleting a rule before applying the change. Other models may use a different interface. See the ASUS VPN Fusion FAQ and your model’s manual.

Choose between interface removal and a factory reset

Recovery path Use it when What it changes
Remove the profile and rule in the interface You can sign in, identify the relevant settings, and want to preserve the rest of the router configuration. Removes the selected VPN profile and, if applicable, device exception rule.
Restore factory defaults and set up again You cannot access or trust the configuration interface, or settings remain or reappear after removal. Clears router configuration. You will need to set up the router and re-enter settings such as Wi-Fi details.

Reset and reconfigure if needed

Use the reset procedure documented for your exact ASUS model; physical reset controls and their procedures are model-specific. If you can still access the administration page, ASUS documents restoring factory defaults through the settings interface. Follow ASUS’s factory-default reset instructions. Afterward, set the router up again with settings you recognize. ASUS’s VPN-client troubleshooting flow recommends current firmware and, in the circumstances it describes, a factory reset followed by Quick Internet Setup (QIS). Obtain firmware from ASUS or ASUSWRT, not an unknown source; see ASUS firmware and support guidance.

Review access and other settings

As a prudent security step, change the router administrator password to a unique one and review settings you did not create, including remote administration. An unfamiliar VPN profile is a reason to investigate, but the ASUS guidance cited here does not establish that a profile alone proves malware, identifies an attacker, or reveals how it arrived. Removing a profile or resetting the router also does not, by itself, prove that every possible compromise has been eliminated.
