A free-to-play game can cost nothing if you stick to its free content; a paid game starts with an upfront price but may add expansions, subscriptions, season passes, or microtransactions. To find which costs less for you, compare what you would actually spend on both games over the same period—and for the kind of play you want.
What counts as the total cost of a game?
Compare the same player, platform, time period, and desired experience. Count purchases required to access or enjoy that experience, even if the store labels them optional. A cosmetic may be optional for progression but still matter to a player who wants that appearance; a paid expansion may be optional for the base game but necessary to access a particular story or activity.

Keep hardware out of the comparison if you already own it. Treat a console subscription as a separate access cost when it applies to the games or online features being compared, rather than assuming every player pays one.
| Game model | Costs to count |
|---|---|
| Free-to-play | In-game purchases such as currency, cosmetics, loot boxes, or progression items; subscriptions or access fees; and paid content. |
| Paid game | Upfront price; subscriptions or access fees; expansions, DLC, or season passes; and in-game purchases. |
For either model, note whether each expense is needed for access, progression, competition, or a cosmetic preference. This makes it easier to distinguish a game’s minimum possible cost from the cost of the experience you actually want.

How to compare costs over the same period
- Choose a time span. Use the same period for each game—for example, the first 12 months after starting.
- List the spending you expect. Include the base price, recurring fees, paid content, and in-game purchases you would actually make. Use real-money prices, not just the number of virtual coins received.
- Separate must-haves from preferences. Mark purchases that enable your intended access or play separately from those you would choose for convenience, competition, or appearance.
- Add the costs for the whole period. A one-time purchase belongs in the total once; recurring subscriptions belong in it for each paid period.
- Optionally divide by hours played. Total spending divided by hours gives a practical spend-per-hour comparison. It is a personal budgeting aid, not an official industry standard, and it does not measure whether the experience was worthwhile.
For example, a player comparing two games could calculate each game’s first-year total from the purchases and fees they expect, then compare the results with their expected hours. The calculation should not assume that every free-to-play player buys items or that every paid-game player buys DLC.
Are free-to-play games really free?
They can be. If a game allows you to access and enjoy the content you want without paying, your cost can remain zero. But “free-to-play” describes the entry price, not a guarantee that all desirable content or faster progression is free.

Free-to-play games may sell characters, weapons, or in-game currency. Virtual currencies can make the real-world price less obvious, especially when items are priced in one currency and purchased through bundles or exchange steps. The CFPB describes this as part of the shift from a fixed upfront price toward games earning revenue over their lifespan: CFPB issue spotlight on video games.
The FTC’s 2025 consumer guidance uses Genshin Impact as a specific example involving currency bundles and multiple currencies. The related settlement required clear real-money prices and odds, and parental consent for loot boxes sold to children under 16. That was a case-specific enforcement outcome, not a rule that applies identically to every game or jurisdiction: FTC guidance on video-game loot boxes.

Can a paid game cost more after purchase?
Yes. Buying the base game may be only the first expense. Downloadable content, expansions, season passes, subscriptions, and microtransactions can add to the total. The FTC has noted that games bought upfront may still include microtransactions to help cover development and update costs: FTC staff perspective on consumer issues in the video-game industry.
That does not mean every paid game requires extra purchases. It means the upfront price alone is not enough to compare lifetime spending. Check whether additional content is needed for the version of the game you want, and whether any subscription is required for the features or platform you plan to use.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

What can spending data tell us?
Available figures show that players spend across many categories, but they do not establish an average lifetime cost for free-to-play games versus paid games.
- U.S. spending: The Entertainment Software Association, Circana, and Sensor Tower reported $60.7 billion in U.S. consumer video-game spending in 2025, up 1.4% from 2024. The total includes physical and digital full games, DLC and microtransactions, subscriptions, hardware, and accessories; it is not a per-player or business-model comparison. The organizations also reported 20% growth in U.S. consumer spending on subscription services in 2025, which makes subscriptions worth including when they apply to your own costs. ESA 2025 spending release
- UK loot-box purchases: Ofcom estimated that 4% of UK adults and 6% of UK children bought a loot box in a free-to-play game, while 4% of adults and 3% of children did so in paid-for games. These figures refer to purchases in the UK in 2020, as reported by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport in 2022; they are not estimates of total spending or average game costs. UK government response on loot boxes
- Reported loot-box experiences: In the same 2022 government response, 63% of adult respondents to a UK player survey reported negative experiences with loot boxes. The response describes experiences ranging from dissatisfaction to reported financial, gambling-related, or mental-health harms. This is a survey result, not a prevalence estimate for all players.
The UK government also noted limitations in available market data, including varying methods and some company data drawn from small samples that may not represent the market. These figures are useful context about specific spending and reported experiences, not proof that one pricing model costs more for an individual.

Which model is likely to cost less for you?
Use the model that matches how you plan to play, not the label on the store page. A free-to-play game is likely to cost less if you are content with its free offering and do not need paid access, progression, or extras. A paid game may be more predictable if its upfront price covers the content you want and you avoid additional purchases. Either can become more expensive when recurring fees or desired add-ons accumulate.
There is no reliable current cross-game dataset establishing average lifetime costs per player for the two models. The most dependable answer comes from comparing specific games, your intended platform and play style, and your own expected spending over a shared time span.
