Design a dual-extrusion part around what the second material must do—not simply around a second color. It might provide removable support, add a flexible section, create a low-friction surface, or make a label. Once that purpose is clear, define the material boundary, design an interface suited to the expected loads, and configure the slicer so each region and support is assigned to the intended extruder.
What dual extrusion can add to a part
Multi-material printing combines two or more distinct materials in one print job. UltiMaker describes this as a way to bring different functional or mechanical properties together in one cohesive part. A second material can also be purely visual, but that should be a deliberate design choice rather than the default.
- Removable support: soluble material can support overhangs, internal cavities, and intricate surfaces that are difficult to support with the model material.
- A different mechanical behavior: a flexible region can act as a hinge or compliant feature beside a more rigid body.
- A distinct surface or production feature: a low-friction zone, contrasting label, or other functional region can be printed as part of the job.
- Visual segmentation: two colors of the same polymer can distinguish labels or regions when different mechanical properties are not required.
In each case, the print succeeds only if the material pairing, boundary, and tool assignments suit the printer and the part’s intended use.
How to choose a material pairing
Choose materials by function first, then check that the particular printer and its validated profiles support the combination. The pairings below are documented examples and starting points, not universal guarantees of adhesion or compatibility.

| Pairing | Useful purpose | Interface or removal plan | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model material + PVA or BVOH | Soluble support for overhangs, cavities, moving assemblies, or precision surfaces. | Provide access for water or the recommended dissolving process; do not seal support inside inaccessible pockets. | Confirm the printer’s material profiles and check moisture handling and removal access. UltiMaker identifies water-soluble PVA support as a way to enable complex support geometries. |
| TPU + PETG | A flexible hinge or compliant feature beside a more rigid body. | Use geometry that captures or mechanically interlocks the flexible region when adhesion alone is uncertain. | Check the printer’s validated temperatures, material handling, and fit. Prusa Pro documents this as an example combination, not a general compatibility guarantee. |
| Rigid shell + PLA infill | A cost-oriented material combination documented by Prusa Pro. | Define which regions form the shell and infill, then assign them deliberately in the slicer. | Confirm that the intended shell/infill assignments are available for the printer and profile. |
| Two colors of the same polymer | Labels, visual segmentation, or other color-coded regions without a need for different mechanical properties. | Define a clean boundary between colors; no special material interface is implied by the color change alone. | Check the chosen profiles and plan for the extra tool changes and any purge or wipe material. |
For every pairing, check nozzle and bed temperatures, adhesion, drying requirements, and the printer’s validated profiles. A material name alone does not establish that two filaments will bond reliably on a particular machine.
How to design the boundary between materials
Give the boundary a job
In CAD, split the part into bodies or regions with an explicit boundary. Decide whether that boundary is cosmetic, structural, flexible, sacrificial, or support-only. Keep it simple enough to inspect in the slicer, and make sure the model’s intended regions remain distinct after slicing.

Use mechanical interlocking when adhesion is uncertain
A flat seam depends heavily on the materials’ bond. If the part will experience pull-out or shear, add positive geometry such as dovetails, snap-fits, undercuts, tabs, or interlocking teeth. UltiMaker describes dovetails, snap-fits, and undercuts as geometric interlocking features that physically restrict movement. For a soft insert, capture or wrap it with the rigid body where the load path allows.
Pay particular attention to peeling loads: a perfectly flat interface gives a peeling force a direct path along the seam. An interlock can make separation require movement around or through a feature instead. It does not, by itself, establish a safe load rating; verify the design with a representative print and the intended use conditions.

How to design supports for dual extrusion
Soluble support
Soluble support can reach surfaces and cavities that would be hard to support with breakaway material. UltiMaker describes water-soluble supports as a way to gain design freedom without adversely affecting the model’s surface quality. In practice, removal depends on the material, the printer profile, and access to the supported region.
- Leave a route for water or the recommended dissolving process to reach the support.
- Avoid sealed pockets that trap support material.
- Check that the part can be rinsed and dried as appropriate for the chosen material and application.
Breakaway support
If support must be removed mechanically, leave clearance for the tool and the operator’s fingers. Orient the part so support can be reached with pliers or a blade, and avoid creating a support contact that is inaccessible behind a wall or inside a closed cavity.

Whichever support method you choose, set the support-material and support-interface extruders intentionally. Support contact, removal method, and interface assignment all affect the finished surface and how easily the support comes away.
How to configure the slicer
Prusa documents separate extruder assignments for perimeters, infill, solid infill, support, support interface, and the wipe tower. These assignments affect tool changes and support behavior, so do not assume that assigning the model’s visible bodies automatically assigns every supporting feature as intended.

- Assign model regions: map each body or painted region to the extruder containing its material.
- Assign support deliberately: choose the support-material extruder and, where applicable, a separate support-interface extruder.
- Review infill and perimeter assignments: check which extruder is assigned to perimeters, infill, and solid infill, especially for a shell-and-infill design.
- Inspect the wipe or prime tower: preview its assigned extruder, tool-change locations, and purge volume. The tower and purging use time and material, so include them in the job plan.
- Preview the sliced result: inspect material boundaries, interface layers, support contacts, and tool changes. Correct assignments that do not match the CAD intent before printing.
How to validate the design before a full print
Print a small interface coupon containing the actual seam or interlock, along with the support settings that matter to the part. This is a practical validation step, not a manufacturer-published test result. Keep the coupon small enough to iterate, but representative enough to expose the failure you need to prevent.
- Check whether the materials adhere or mechanically stay together as intended.
- Check the fit and dimensions of the interface, including any clearance needed for a flexible insert or breakaway support.
- Check whether soluble support can be reached and removed, or whether breakaway support can be accessed with the planned tool.
- Inspect the surface where support touched the model and look for blobs or signs of under-extrusion after tool changes.
- Record the tested temperatures, clearances, and slicer assignments with the production file.
How to weigh the design trade-offs
A second material can solve a real design problem, but it adds tool changes and may add purge or wipe material, print time, and material cost. Consider those costs alongside the interface and post-processing method rather than treating dual extrusion as a free extra.
Quick Recap
| Decision | Question to answer | Trade-off to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Function | Is the second material for color, a label, a flexible-hard assembly, a low-friction surface, or removable support? | Different purposes need different boundaries and validation. |
| Interface | Will adhesive contact be enough, or does the design need an interlock or captured insert? | Interlocking geometry can resist movement, but consumes space and must fit the part’s load path. |
| Post-processing | Will support be peeled, cut, dissolved, or not removed? | Removal access and the resulting surface must be designed into the part. |
| Workflow cost | How many tool changes and how much purge, wipe material, and extra print time does the design require? | More material assignments can increase waste and job complexity. |
| Risk | Could compatibility, warping, moisture sensitivity, nozzle contamination, or dimensional tolerance affect the result? | Use the printer’s validated profiles and a representative coupon to check risks that matter to the application. |
