Bacon usually smokes in the oven because grease or food residue is heating on a hot surface, or because the bacon is close enough to an element or broiler to scorch. Some smoke can be a normal part of cooking greasy food; smoke alone does not mean the oven is broken. Start by catching drips, checking for residue, and adjusting the bacon’s position.
Why bacon smokes in the oven
Cooking can produce some smoke, and greasy foods may produce more than other foods. GE Appliances notes that foods normally grilled can be especially smoky in an oven: GE Appliances’ guidance on oven smoke.
Grease or food is reaching a hot surface
Rendered bacon grease that spills or drips onto the oven floor or another hot surface can smoke. Food residue left inside the oven can do the same when heated. Whirlpool lists grease or food drips and oven residue among possible causes of oven smoke: Whirlpool’s oven-smoke troubleshooting guide.
The bacon is too close to direct heat
Bacon close to a heating element or broiler can scorch and smoke. This is more likely under broil, where food is exposed to intense direct heat. Whirlpool and Wolf recommend changing food position or reducing broiling exposure when food smokes or browns excessively: Whirlpool and Wolf’s broiling guidance.

A heating element may be faulty
A failing element is another possible source of smoke. If smoke continues after you address grease, residue, and food positioning—or an element appears damaged—turn the oven off and follow the owner’s manual. Whirlpool advises disconnecting power if an element appears to be failing; contact qualified service if the problem persists.
How to reduce smoke while cooking bacon
- Catch the grease. Use an oven-safe rimmed baking sheet or drip pan to collect rendered fat and help keep it off the oven floor. It can reduce drips but cannot guarantee a smoke-free cook.
- Remove oven residue. Clean the oven according to its manual. If smoke started after cleaning, cleaner residue may be the cause; follow the cleaner’s instructions for removing any remaining product.
- Keep bacon away from direct heat. Use a lower rack position and move the food farther from the heating element. If broiling, shorten the broiling time or switch to a less direct cooking setting.
- Use less added oil or spray. Bacon releases its own fat, and GE recommends avoiding large amounts of cooking oil or spray while keeping the oven interior clean to limit excessive smoke.
- Stop if smoke persists or an element looks damaged. Turn the oven off and consult the manual. If ordinary residue and positioning issues do not explain the smoke, arrange qualified service rather than continuing to use a potentially faulty oven.
Cook bacon fully without relying on a fixed time
There is no single reliable oven temperature or cooking time for every kind of bacon. USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service guidance says timing depends on the bacon’s type and thickness, the heat, and the crispness you want. Follow the package directions and oven manual, and check that the bacon is cooked fully; lowering the heat may mean it needs longer. Do not partially cook bacon, refrigerate it, and finish cooking it later. FSIS guidance: Bacon and Food Safety.
