To run a Windows app on Linux with Wine, install Wine using your distribution’s supported instructions, create or choose a Wine prefix, configure it with winecfg, then run the app’s installer and executable with that same prefix. A prefix is a self-contained Wine environment; using a separate one for an app helps keep its settings and dependencies from affecting other programs. Wine is a compatibility layer, not a Windows virtual machine, so compatibility depends on the application and its requirements.
What Wine does—and what it does not do
Wine translates Windows API calls into calls that work with the host operating system. It does not simulate a complete Windows installation in a virtual machine. That distinction explains why a Windows application can integrate with Linux yet still behave differently from one running on Windows: each app depends on particular Windows components, behaviors, and workarounds.
The Wine project describes Wine as “a compatibility layer capable of running Windows applications on several POSIX-compliant operating systems, such as Linux, macOS, & BSD.” See WineHQ’s About Wine page.
What a Wine prefix is
A prefix is a directory containing a Wine environment’s configuration and Windows-like components, including registry data and libraries. Wine uses $HOME/.wine by default. Set WINEPREFIX to use another directory, such as an app-specific prefix.

Apps can share a prefix, but that also means they share its configuration and installed components. Separate prefixes make it easier to isolate dependencies and settings: a change made for one app is less likely to affect another. In return, each additional environment takes space and requires its own maintenance. The March 12, 2024 guide to multiple Wine environments discusses both shared and separate setups.
Run an app in its own prefix
First check the application’s vendor instructions and its Wine AppDB entry for requirements, known issues, and any recommended prefix architecture. Install Wine using the current instructions for your Linux distribution; package names and setup steps vary, so there is no single installation command that applies everywhere.

- Choose a prefix. In a POSIX-compatible shell, set a directory for the app:
export WINEPREFIX="$HOME/.local/share/wineprefixes/myapp" - Initialize and configure it. Run
winecfgwith that environment variable set. You can also target it for a single command:WINEPREFIX="$HOME/.local/share/wineprefixes/myapp" winecfg - Run the installer in the same prefix. For example:
wine "$HOME/Downloads/setup.exe"
Quote paths that contain spaces. Wine can also be invoked with an MSI installer file as an argument. - Launch the installed program in that prefix. Locate its executable and run it with Wine while the same
WINEPREFIXis set. Follow the app’s own instructions or its AppDB entry if it specifies a particular executable or launch option.
The wine(1) reference documents launching Windows programs and selecting the data directory with WINEPREFIX. Fedora’s Wine guide points users to AppDB for application-specific compatibility information.
Choose the prefix architecture before setup
A prefix’s architecture is set when the prefix is created. Wine refuses to start if WINEARCH does not match an existing prefix; do not expect to convert a prefix by changing that setting later. Check the app’s requirements before creating its environment. If you discover that an existing prefix has the wrong architecture, create a new prefix with the required architecture rather than trying to switch the old one.

Whether a 32-bit-only prefix is supported depends on the Wine build and the packages available for your distribution. Follow that distribution’s current instructions instead of applying a multiarchitecture package command intended for a different Linux release.
Install dependencies only when the app calls for them
Winetricks is a helper with command-line and graphical interfaces. It can adjust Wine settings and download or install Windows DLLs and fonts; it also offers some application installations and workarounds. It does not mean every app needs the same runtime or that a particular DLL will fix an unrelated launch failure.

Open Winetricks against the app’s prefix:
WINEPREFIX="$HOME/.local/share/wineprefixes/myapp" winetricks
If the application’s documentation or a credible report for that app in AppDB recommends a Winetricks verb, run it against the same prefix. Apply one purposeful change at a time and keep track of what you installed. That makes it easier to identify which change helped—or caused a new problem. The Ubuntu Noble winetricks(1) reference describes the utility’s command and GUI capabilities.

Troubleshoot a Wine app that will not launch
- Verify the prefix. Confirm that
winecfg, Winetricks, the installer, and the app launch all use the intendedWINEPREFIX. Setting up one prefix and launching in another is an easy mistake to miss. - Check the exact app and version in AppDB. Look for current compatibility reports, required dependencies, and known workarounds. A report for a different app version may not apply.
- Check architecture errors. If Wine reports a mismatch, use a prefix created for the required architecture. The existing prefix cannot simply be switched to another architecture.
- Use evidence before adding components. Check the vendor’s instructions or a credible AppDB report before installing a DLL or font through Winetricks. Arbitrary additions can make it harder to identify the original problem.
- Use Wine project support resources when needed. WineHQ lists documentation, its FAQ, installation and configuration wiki, forums, AppDB, and Bugzilla on its Getting Help page. It also lists CodeWeavers as a paid support route; check that provider’s current service details before relying on them.
There is no universal fix established for installer, graphics, sound, launcher, or update failures. The useful diagnostic details are the exact app and version, Wine version, prefix architecture, and components installed in that prefix.
