Start with Android’s built-in accessibility options: switch from gestures to button navigation, try one-handed mode, or use voice, a switch, a mouse, or a physical keyboard instead of repeated touchscreen taps. The best fit depends on which movements are comfortable and repeatable. Settings names and availability vary by phone, so search Settings for the feature name if a listed path does not match your device.

Reduce precise taps and reach

First, make the standard interface demand less movement. Google lists button navigation as an alternative to gesture navigation, and one-handed mode as an option for reaching controls more easily. These features can be useful when swiping or stretching across a large screen is difficult.

  1. Open Settings and go to Accessibility. Look for navigation or one-handed options. The exact menu path varies among Android devices; if you do not see an option, search Settings for “button navigation” or “one-handed mode.”
  2. Try button navigation instead of gestures. Use the navigation method that requires less precise movement for tasks such as going back or returning home.
  3. Turn on one-handed mode if available. Test whether it brings frequently used controls within comfortable reach on your phone.

Google’s Android accessibility overview describes these options, but manufacturers customize menus and may not offer every feature on every model.

Use voice to navigate and enter text

Voice Access can control many phone functions without touching the display. Google documents spoken commands to open apps, select visible controls, scroll, navigate, and edit text. Examples include “Open Gmail,” “Scroll down,” “Tap compose,” and “Go home.”

Set up Voice Access

  1. Install or turn on Voice Access if needed, then open Settings > Accessibility. Select Voice Access and follow the setup prompts. If the label or path is different, search Settings for “Voice Access.”
  2. Choose how to start listening. Depending on the Voice Access version and phone, activation may be available through an accessibility shortcut, a notification, or a configured physical key. Available controls can differ.
  3. Try a simple spoken command. Use a command such as “Go home” or “Scroll down,” then follow the on-screen prompts if Voice Access asks you to identify a control.

Voice Access settings may let you adjust listening behavior—for example, whether it pauses after 30 seconds without speech, starts listening when the screen wakes, stops listening when you touch the screen, or can be activated with a keyboard key or Bluetooth switch. Not every version exposes all of these settings. Consult Google’s Voice Access setup instructions and Voice Access command list for the current guidance.

Google’s cited command-help page lists English, Spanish, German, Italian, French, Portuguese, and Japanese. It documents only the top 25 commands for Portuguese and Japanese. Language support and command availability can change, so check the help page and your device before relying on a particular command.

Control the phone with a switch or keyboard

Switch Access lets a connected external switch or keyboard key operate on-screen controls. It can be an alternative when pressing a switch or key is easier than tapping the screen. Google describes two common approaches: one switch with automatic scanning, or two or more switches with group selection.

Choose a scanning approach

  • One switch with auto-scan: the phone moves through selectable items, and the user presses the switch when the desired item is highlighted.
  • Two or more switches with group selection: switches can be assigned to select a group and then an item within it.

Set up and adjust Switch Access

  1. Connect a compatible USB or Bluetooth switch or keyboard. Compatibility depends on the phone and accessory; check both manufacturers’ documentation before purchasing or relying on a device.
  2. Open Settings > Accessibility > Switch Access and follow the setup prompts. Search Settings for “Switch Access” if the path differs.
  3. Assign switches and configure scanning. Switch Access settings can adjust scan behavior and highlight style, and may offer spoken feedback.
  4. Test repeat and release options. Settings include an option to ignore repeated presses and an option to perform an action when a switch is released. Acting on release may suit someone who finds releasing easier than pressing.

Some initial setup steps still require touchscreen input. If getting through setup is difficult, ask a trusted person to help configure it. Google’s Switch Access setup guide and Switch Access settings instructions explain the available controls. Point scanning and the actions menu can also help select a specific screen location or perform an action on a selected control; see Google’s Switch Access tips.

Try a mouse or physical keyboard

If a mouse or keyboard is easier to operate than the touchscreen, Android supports these as alternative inputs. With a mouse, automatic click can activate a control after the cursor pauses over it. Google also documents Bounce Keys, Mouse Keys, Slow Keys, and Sticky Keys for Android devices when a physical keyboard is connected.

  • Mouse: connect a compatible mouse and look in Accessibility settings for automatic click or cursor-related options.
  • Physical keyboard: connect a keyboard, then search Accessibility settings for Bounce Keys, Mouse Keys, Slow Keys, or Sticky Keys. These accommodations depend on having a physical keyboard connected.

Menu labels and hardware compatibility vary, so confirm the options on the specific phone. Google’s Android accessibility overview describes these input options.

Choose an approach that fits the person and phone

There is no established effectiveness ranking among these options in the cited Google help material. Try the least demanding input for the person’s usual tasks, taking into account:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Comfortable movement: Can they make a short tap, press a switch, use a keyboard key, or move a mouse more reliably?
  • Speech: Is speaking practical and private in the places where they use the phone, and is their language supported?
  • Setup: Can they complete the initial settings themselves, or will someone need to help?
  • Portability and compatibility: Would an accessory be convenient to carry, and does it work with the specific Android device?

These are practical factors for choosing what to try, not medical guidance or evidence that one method works better for everyone. Google’s documentation explains how its features work; it does not establish comparative clinical benefit.

Check the phone before relying on a feature or accessory

Android manufacturers customize accessibility menus, and features, labels, app flows, and accessory compatibility can vary by device and version. Search Settings for the feature name if the documented path is missing. For a switch, keyboard, or mouse, verify compatibility with both the phone and the accessory documentation before buying; Google’s instructions do not certify particular brands or models.
