Yes—but as a laboratory demonstration, not a product. In 2013, UCLA researchers reported a transparent OLED that remained lit when stretched to more than twice its original size, folded through 180 degrees and twisted. They also built a working 5 × 5 monochrome display, while noting that air sensitivity and the lack of stretchable thin-film transistors remained barriers to practical screens.

What UCLA demonstrated

The 2013 work showed an elastomeric polymer light-emitting device: an OLED-style emitter designed to keep operating as its materials deform. The Nature Photonics paper reported emission under strains as large as 120% and described a 5 × 5 passive-matrix monochrome display. In engineering terms, 120% strain means an increase in length equal to 120% of the starting length—about 2.2 times that length, rather than 120% of the original size.

UCLA’s report also described a maximum-stretch demonstration in which the device was extended to more than twice its original size while functioning. That is a maximum-strain result, not a claim that the display maintained that extension through repeated use.

Stretching, folding and twisting

In a separate repeatability demonstration, the team stretched and restretched the OLED 1,000 times at 30% extension, and it continued operating. The researchers also showed it folded through 180 degrees and twisted in multiple directions. The 180-degree fold indicates that the thin device could bend back on itself; it does not establish that it could tolerate a sharp crease or function as a consumer foldable phone screen.

A display, not just a glowing sample

The 5 × 5 passive-matrix arrangement matters because it demonstrated separately addressable pixels in a small monochrome array. It was still a simple prototype, not a high-resolution, full-color screen with the integrated electronics and durability expected in a commercial device.

How the OLED was made stretchable

The researchers placed a single electroluminescent polymer blend between two transparent, elastic composite electrodes. Those electrodes used a network of silver nanowires embedded in a rubbery polymer. The layered device was made using an all-solution process.

An OLED needs electrodes that conduct electricity while allowing light through. In a stretchable display, they must also deform without losing their function. UCLA identified suitable elastic transparent electrodes as a major obstacle. The nanowire-and-polymer composite was intended to combine transparency, conductivity and mechanical compliance.

The electrodes were patterned in crossing column-and-row lines. That layout provided the passive-matrix structure used to form the 5 × 5 pixels. The result addressed a key materials challenge, but it did not eliminate the need for stretchable components throughout the rest of a complete display system.

Why the 2013 result was not a consumer screen

UCLA’s report identified two important engineering barriers. First, the materials were sensitive to air and needed better sealing. Second, fully interactive displays would require stretchable thin-film transistors. A light-emitting layer and flexible electrodes alone do not provide the switching circuitry needed to control a practical, complex screen.

These limits are why the result is best described as a research prototype. The demonstrations established that a small OLED-based device could emit light while stretched and deformed; they did not establish consumer-ready sealing, integrated stretchable electronics, production scale or a launch date.

What later stretchable-display studies achieved

Peer-reviewed work published in 2024 reported progress using different device architectures. The reported numbers measure different things—such as system strain, active-area fill factor and cycle life—and come from different test protocols. They should not be treated as a direct ranking or as proof that any one design is ready for sale.

2024 approach Reported result What the result describes
Hidden-active-area architecture 87% fill factor after 30% biaxial system strain; about 10% current-efficiency loss after 1,000 biaxial stretching cycles Active-area ratio after strain and efficiency change after repeated biaxial cycling, as reported in the 2024 Nature study
Stress-relief pillars Up to 95% strain; 100,000 stretch-release cycles at 50% strain Strain and cycle endurance reported for the tested device in the 2024 npj study
3D height-alternant architecture 85% initial active-area ratio; up to 40% system strain; reliable operation over 2,000 biaxial cycles Initial active-area ratio, maximum system strain and cycling result reported in the 2024 Nature study

These later reports show continued work on keeping emitting regions usable while the overall device deforms. Their different architectures and test conditions mean that the strain and cycle figures do not by themselves establish how a complete screen would perform in everyday use.

Does UCLA’s 2025 technology mean stretchable OLEDs are on sale?

No. A separate 2025 UCLA research brief described a printable stretchable light-emitting membrane made from molybdenum disulfide and Nafion, and said it was covered by a patent application filed by the UCLA Technology Development Group. That is a separate technology and a licensing signal; it is not evidence that the 2013 OLED, or a comparable consumer display, is commercially available.

The available evidence therefore supports a clear distinction: UCLA demonstrated a functioning stretchable OLED prototype in 2013, and later studies reported further research advances, but the cited work does not establish when—or whether—stretchable OLED screens will become consumer products.
