“God’s Hand” is the nickname for CG 4, a cloud of gas and dust about 1,300 light-years away in the Gum Nebula. A new image released by NSF NOIRLab on May 6, 2024, shows its dense, rounded head and long, faint tail, which together resemble a hand reaching into space—or a comet. CG 4 is neither a hand nor a comet: it is a cometary globule in the constellation Puppis.
What is God’s Hand in space?
CG 4 is a cometary globule: a dusty cloud of gas and dust whose shape has a compact head and an extended tail. Its silhouette gives rise to the nicknames “God’s Hand” and “cometary globule.” The resemblance is visual, not a physical connection to a comet. In its May 6, 2024, image release, NSF NOIRLab described the scene as “A ghostly hand appears to be emerging from the interstellar medium and reaching out into the cosmos.” NOIRLab’s image release includes the photograph and its description.
Where is CG 4, and how big is it?
CG 4 lies about 1,300 light-years from Earth in Puppis, within the Gum Nebula. Its head is about 1.5 light-years across, while its faint tail extends roughly 8 light-years, according to the dimensions reported by CBS News in 2024, citing the NOIRLab release. These are dimensions of a vast interstellar cloud, not a small object moving through a planetary system.
How do stars shape and illuminate the cloud?
Astronomers have not settled exactly how cometary globules acquire their distinctive forms. One proposed explanation is that winds and intense radiation from nearby hot, massive stars shape the clouds. That influence has two effects on CG 4: the stars help make it visible by illuminating or scattering light from its dusty material, while their radiation gradually strips material away and erodes the head.

Despite that erosion, the head still holds enough gas to support the formation of several stars about the mass of the Sun. CG 4 is therefore not just a striking silhouette; it is a cloud with material relevant to star formation, even as its surroundings are wearing it down.
How was the image made?
The photograph was captured with the Dark Energy Camera (DECam), a 570-megapixel wide-field camera mounted on the Víctor M. Blanco 4-meter Telescope at the U.S. National Science Foundation’s Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. NOIRLab describes the instrument and observatory in its DECam overview.

DECam was built for the Dark Energy Survey, which ran from 2013 through 2019 and imaged about 300 million galaxies. The camera’s name reflects that survey’s scientific purpose; this image of CG 4 is an example of the instrument’s astronomical imaging beyond the survey’s galaxy tally. The survey instrument page notes that DECam achieved first light on September 12, 2012, and describes its installation on the Blanco telescope: Dark Energy Survey instrument details.
