Start with the SX6012’s serial console and identify its current software and boot environment before attempting recovery. An EMC label alone does not establish that the switch is running Mellanox MLNX-OS or that a particular image will work. Inspect the hardware, capture the boot transcript, and verify an image’s architecture and provenance before reinstalling anything.
Identify the switch and check its condition
The SX6012 is a managed, half-width 1U SwitchX-2 switch. Mellanox Technologies’ 2017 SX60xx Hardware User Manual lists these specifications:
| Item | SX6012 specification |
|---|---|
| Data ports | 12 QSFP+ cages |
| Port rates | 10, 40, or 56 Gb/s per port |
| Switching capacity | 1.34 Tb/s non-blocking |
| Management CPU | PPC460EX |
| Chassis dimensions | 44 mm × 200 mm × 398.8 mm |
| Weight | 2.98 kg with one PSU; 3.2 kg with two PSUs |
| Power input | 100–240 VAC, 50–60 Hz |
| Operating temperature | 0–45 °C |
| Heat dissipation | 573 BTU/hr |
Before changing software, photograph the labels, airflow direction, power supplies, fan modules, and port LEDs. Record the serial number and save the complete boot transcript. Check for obvious physical damage and make sure the fans and power supplies are seated and operating. Do not energize a replacement fan or PSU until its mechanical fit and airflow direction match the chassis.
The EMC-branded reference describes the SX6012 as managed, with a subnet manager and one Ethernet management connection; it distinguishes the SX6005 as unmanaged. Its U-Boot observations record 2 GB DRAM, 16 MB flash, and 1024 MiB NAND. Those are field observations, not a current vendor specification.

Connect to the serial console
Use the RJ45 port labeled CONSOLE, not the Ethernet port labeled MGT. Mellanox’s bring-up procedure specifies a DB9-to-RJ45 harness and serial settings of 9600 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity, and no flow control (9600-8-N-1). The manual names HAR000028 as an RS232 DB9-to-RJ45 harness for managed switches. If the host has no serial port, a USB-to-RS232 adapter may be needed between the computer and harness.
- With the switch powered off or disconnected as appropriate for your setup, connect the host serial adapter and the harness to the switch’s CONSOLE port.
- Open a serial terminal and set it to 9600 baud, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, and no flow control.
- Power on the switch and capture all output, including any error messages and the point where boot stops.
- If output is unreadable or absent, check the host’s serial port and cabling, then try 115200-8-N-1. NVIDIA’s ONIE documentation describes that rate on some ONIE builds; it is not a guarantee that every SX6012 uses it.
A console connection is useful even when the management network is unreachable: it can reveal whether the unit reaches its OS, an ONIE menu, or a U-Boot prompt.

Determine which recovery path applies
Do not choose an image solely because its filename mentions SX6012. First establish whether the unit is running EMC SwitchOS, MLNX-OS, or ONIE, and note the boot environment and any platform or architecture information shown on the console. Preserve the transcript so that the software state and failure point are not lost when interrupting startup.
If the switch reaches an OS
Record the OS identity and current configuration before attempting a reinstall. EMC field documentation reports that the described EMC OS has fewer features than Linux-based MLNX-OS, including no SSH, no VPI, and no subnet manager in that configuration. These are reported limitations of that EMC configuration, not a claim that every EMC-labeled unit has identical software.

If U-Boot or a boot menu appears
The EMC reference shows a “Hit any key to stop autoboot” prompt and a U-Boot prompt; Mellanox’s manual also documents an MLNX-OS boot menu and U-Boot prompt. Save the boot transcript before interrupting autoboot. The presence of U-Boot is a recovery entry point, not evidence that an arbitrary firmware image is compatible.
If ONIE is installed
NVIDIA’s ONIE User Manual describes using the ONIE menu for OS uninstall or reinstall. ONIE provides Rescue mode for inspecting the system, as well as Install, Uninstall, and Embed paths. NVIDIA’s examples use onie-nos-install for a network operating system image and onie-self-update for ONIE itself. The installer checks checksum and architecture before invoking installation; that check does not establish that an image is licensed, current, or appropriate for this specific unit.

Use an image only when its source, architecture, and intended boot environment are verified. Current MLNX-OS entitlement, image availability, and serial-number-specific support are not established here; check with NVIDIA/Mellanox support or the owner’s licensed repository rather than treating historical image names in examples as proof of present support.
Reinstall carefully and protect configuration
Choose a recovery operation based on whether you need to preserve existing configuration and OS data. NVIDIA documents ONIE Uninstall as scrubbing the former OS data, while Embed preserves data according to its documentation. Either operation can leave the switch unavailable during reboot, and an incorrect image or interrupted installation can make recovery harder.

- Back up configuration and record existing network settings wherever the current OS remains accessible.
- Keep the saved serial transcript and note the exact image source, filename, and architecture before beginning.
- Do not proceed if you cannot verify that the image is intended for this platform and boot environment.
- Allow the selected operation to finish and reboot fully; do not remove power during an active installation.
ONIE menu names and behavior can depend on the installed ONIE build. Follow the instructions for that build rather than assuming every ONIE version presents identical options.

After software recovery, test the switch out of production. Confirm management reachability and the expected management features, then check whether the subnet manager behaves as required by the fabric. Inspect port counters and negotiated link speeds, and verify fan and thermal status before attaching production connections. A successful boot by itself does not prove that management, switching, or cooling is healthy.
Understand QSFP+ speed and breakout options
The SX6012 has 12 QSFP+ cages, and the 2017 Mellanox hardware manual lists 10, 40, and 56 Gb/s operation per port. It states: “In this switch, all ports can be split to 4x10GbE, no limitation.” That describes the switch’s breakout capability; it does not mean every cable, optic, or connected device will work at every rate.
For a 40GbE connection, use a QSFP+ link and confirm that both endpoints and any optics or DAC are compatible. For a 4×10GbE breakout, use an appropriate QSFP+ breakout cable and verify that the far-end ports support 10GbE and the required breakout configuration. Check endpoint compatibility, optic coding, and speed before purchase or installation, then confirm negotiated speed and counters during testing.
Replacement parts and airflow
The Mellanox replacement-parts appendix lists these part families: MSX60-PF and MSX60-PR 300 W power supplies; MSX60-FF and MSX60-FR fan modules; and MSX60-DKIT rack hardware. Use the exact identifiers as search references, then verify revision, mechanical fit, and airflow direction against the installed unit. Matching the part family alone is not enough if the replacement reverses airflow or does not fit the chassis correctly.
