To make Gboard your Samsung Galaxy’s default keyboard, install it if necessary, then choose it under Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default > Default keyboard. Select Gboard from the list.
Install Gboard if it is not already on your phone
Open the Google Play Store, search for Gboard, and install the app. Google’s setup guide covers installing Gboard on Android phones and tablets. If it is already installed, go straight to the keyboard settings.
Choose Gboard as the default keyboard
- Open Settings.
- Tap General management.
- Tap Keyboard list and default.
- Tap Default keyboard.
- Select Gboard.
These are the steps in Samsung Canada’s instructions for changing the default keyboard. Samsung’s US support page also uses the Keyboard list and default setting name: Adjust keyboard settings on your Galaxy phone or tablet. Labels and menu locations can vary with a Galaxy model or software version. If you do not see the listed path, search Settings for Keyboard list and default.
If Gboard is missing from the keyboard list
- Check that Gboard has finished installing from the Play Store, then return to Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default > Default keyboard.
- If it still does not appear, use Settings search to find Keyboard list and default and check again.
- If neither step makes Gboard available, contact support for your Galaxy model and software version. Samsung’s instructions advise downloading a keyboard before selecting it, but do not establish one universal fix for every case where an installed keyboard is absent.
Changing Gboard’s language does not change the Galaxy’s system language
Gboard’s typing languages and the phone’s device language are separate settings. Google explains that adding or changing a language in Gboard does not change the Android device language in its instructions for typing in a different language.
