If the selection still changes—or Gboard switches while you type—follow the matching keyboard-specific steps below. Settings labels can vary by model and software version; if a path does not match, search Settings for “Default keyboard.”
Set your preferred keyboard as the default
- Open Settings → General management → Keyboard list and default → Default keyboard.
- Tap the keyboard you want to use, such as Gboard.
- Return to Keyboard list and default and confirm that your preferred keyboard is enabled in the keyboard list.
Samsung’s current US instructions allow users to select an installed keyboard, including one downloaded from Play Store or Galaxy Store. If the menu labels differ on your Galaxy, search Settings for Default keyboard. Samsung’s keyboard settings guide documents the available settings and reset options.
If Samsung Keyboard keeps taking over
Reset Samsung Keyboard settings
- In Settings, search for Samsung Keyboard and open its settings.
- Scroll to Reset to default settings.
- Tap Reset keyboard settings and confirm.
This dedicated reset does not remove downloaded languages. The reset menu also offers separate actions for erasing personalized predictions, erasing personalized touch-recognition data, and clearing cache; those are not the same as resetting keyboard settings. Samsung describes these choices in its keyboard settings guide.
Do not confuse a settings reset with clearing app data
Clearing Samsung Keyboard’s app data is broader than the keyboard-settings reset: Samsung says it removes all keyboard settings, including saved words. Try the dedicated reset first if you want to preserve learned words. Samsung’s keyboard malfunction troubleshooting steps include clearing cache or data as more extensive remedies.

If Gboard is the keyboard that switches away
Samsung Keyboard resetting will not repair a Gboard-specific app problem. First check that Gboard is enabled in the Galaxy keyboard list and selected as the default. If it disappears from the list after an update, turn it on again in the on-screen keyboard settings.
Switch back while typing
If another keyboard appears as you type, touch and hold the globe key on the keyboard, then tap Gboard.

Repair Gboard if it is malfunctioning
- Force stop Gboard, then open it again.
- In Android’s app settings, clear Gboard’s cache first.
- If the problem continues, clear Gboard data or storage. Google says this returns Gboard to its default state.
- If needed, reinstall Gboard from Google Play. If Gboard is your only installed keyboard, install and enable a secondary keyboard before removing it.
These steps address Gboard app trouble; they do not establish why a Galaxy’s default selection changes. See Google’s Gboard troubleshooting guide for its Android-specific instructions.
Check for an app conflict if the setting will not stick
- Restart the phone and check for a software update.
- Test the keyboard in Safe mode.
- If the issue stops in Safe mode, Samsung says a third-party app is causing the problem. Remove recently installed apps one at a time, restarting and testing after each removal to identify the conflict.
Safe mode can indicate that a downloaded app is involved, but it does not identify which app by itself. Samsung’s troubleshooting guide covers restart, updates, Safe mode, and other keyboard-malfunction steps.

Use factory reset only as a last resort
A factory reset erases all data on the device, not just keyboard settings. Back up important data before considering it, and try the keyboard-specific resets and Safe mode test first. Samsung lists factory reset as a final troubleshooting option in its Galaxy keyboard malfunction guidance.
