Fujitsu sold its approximately 29.68 million shares in Eudyna Devices Inc. to Sumitomo Electric Industries in a transaction announced in December 2008, with the transfer planned for April 1, 2009. This was a sale of Fujitsu’s stake in a jointly formed compound-semiconductor company—not a sale of Fujitsu’s entire semiconductor business.
What Fujitsu sold—and when
EE Times reported on December 22, 2008, that Fujitsu had agreed to sell its approximately 29.68 million Eudyna Devices shares to Sumitomo Electric Industries. The companies planned to complete the transfer on April 1, 2009. The contemporaneous report does not state the purchase price or valuation. EE Times
Eudyna had originally been owned equally by Fujitsu and Sumitomo Electric. Fujitsu’s transaction therefore transferred its holding to its existing joint-venture partner; it did not represent a sale of Fujitsu’s entire semiconductor group.
Why Fujitsu sold its stake
The reported rationale was restructuring: Fujitsu aimed to cut costs and offset losses. Sumitomo Electric framed the purchase differently, as a way to add products and technologies for its large customer base and increase market share. EE Times and Semiconductor Today

What Eudyna was
Fujitsu and Sumitomo Electric announced their basic joint-venture agreement on December 25, 2003. The venture brought together Fujitsu Quantum Devices, a wholly owned Fujitsu subsidiary engaged in compound-semiconductor development, manufacturing and sales, and Sumitomo Electric’s compound-semiconductor electronic-devices operation. They planned equal ownership and targeted operations beginning April 1, 2004. Fujitsu’s December 25, 2003 announcement stated: “Fujitsu and Sumitomo Electric will each have an equal equity ownership in the joint venture.”
The companies’ complementary technology backgrounds were part of the combination: Fujitsu brought its compound-semiconductor device business, while Sumitomo Electric brought strengths in materials and epitaxial growth. Eudyna consolidated optical and electronic compound-semiconductor device manufacturing businesses. Semiconductor Today

What Eudyna made and where the products were used
Eudyna’s stated scope included microwave devices, optical-communications devices and other compound-semiconductor devices. The 2003 announcement connected these products with several communications and electronics applications:
- Fixed-line telecommunications networks and fiber-to-the-home infrastructure
- Wireless base stations and mobile terminals
- Wireless LANs and broadband communications
- IP networking and digital home appliances
These were industrial components serving communications and information-technology markets, rather than consumer-facing products sold under the Eudyna name.
