This build uses two NodeMCU ESP8266 boards to make a Wii Nunchuck the physical controller for a two-motor robot car. One board reads the Nunchuck and sends two motor-control values over Wi-Fi using UDP; the other receives them and drives the motors through an L298N module. The joystick steers and accelerates the car, with a Z-button toggle for tilt control.

How the ESP8266 Nunchuck car works

The controller and car are separate Wi-Fi nodes, which is why the project uses two NodeMCU ESP8266 boards rather than one. The remote board reads the Wii Nunchuck over I2C, then sends its motor commands as UDP data. The car board receives the data and connects it to the L298N’s two motor channels. The L298N is the motor interface; it does not replace either the ESP8266 or the car chassis.

The project author, Boian Mitov, describes the ESP8266 modules as “great low cost stand alone controllers with built in Wi-Fi” suited to remotely controlling the robot car. The project page’s parts list and instructions are at Instructables.

Parts and board roles

  • Two NodeMCU ESP8266/ESP-12 development boards: one for the car and one for the controller.
  • A two-wheel smart-car chassis with two geared DC motors, gears and wheels.
  • An L298N dual motor-driver module.
  • A Wii Nunchuck controller.
  • USB power supplies and cables, plus female-female and female-male jumper wires.

The motors connect to the L298N outputs: one motor to OUT1/OUT2 and the other to OUT3/OUT4. The tutorial leaves the driver’s ENA and ENB jumpers installed and uses two control pins per motor for direction and speed.

  • NodeMcu is an open source Lua based firmware for the ESP8266, ultra low cost wireless modules, development boards for rapid prototyping, integrated with ESP8266 chips.
  • The ESP8266 has powerful on-board processing and storage capabilities, and can be integrated with sensors and other application-specific devices through its GPIOs.
  • It is compatible with Arduino IDE,works great with the latest Mongoose IoT/Micropython.
  • Modern Internet development tools can use the built-in API to instantly put your idea on the fast track.

Wire the Nunchuck to the remote NodeMCU

The tutorial connects the Nunchuck to the controller-side NodeMCU as follows:

Nunchuck wire NodeMCU connection
Yellow (SCL) Digital pin 1
Green (SDA) Digital pin 2
Black Ground
Red 3.3V

This is the I2C connection to the remote board. The red wire goes to the NodeMCU’s 3.3V pin as specified by the project wiring.

Configure the Wi-Fi and UDP link

The documented setup makes the car NodeMCU a Wi-Fi access point at 200.200.200.200. The remote NodeMCU uses 200.200.200.100, placing both boards on the same subnet. The remote sends UDP packets to port 8888 at the car’s address. On receipt, the car-side design splits the incoming structure into two analog values and routes them to the two motor channels.

These are the tutorial’s fixed network settings, not a measured range or performance specification. The project does not report wireless range, latency, battery runtime or motor-speed measurements.

HiLetgo 3pcs ESP8266 NodeMCU CP2102 ESP-12E Development Board Open Source Serial Module Works Great for Arduino IDE/Micropython (Large)
  • Built-in Micro-USB, with flash and reset switches, easy to program
  • Arduino compatible, works great with the latest Arduino IDE/Mongoose IoT/Micropython
  • Data download access to the website: http://www;nodemcu;com

Control the car

  • Push the Nunchuck joystick forward or backward to move forward or reverse.
  • Move it left or right to turn.
  • Press Z to switch from joystick control to tilt control; press Z again to return to joystick control.

If a motor spins in the wrong direction, the project notes that its motor wires may need to be swapped.

Build and upload the software

The documented workflow uses Visuino to create the graphical component design, then generates Arduino code for compilation and upload. In Visuino, select “NodeMCU ESP-12” for the board. Build and upload the design to each NodeMCU, configuring one as the car receiver and the other as the Nunchuck remote.

  • GPIO 1 INTO 2

The tutorial also uses Arduino tooling, but it warns that some older combinations of Arduino IDE and ESP support caused compile problems. Tool versions and board-package compatibility can change, so follow the project’s workflow without assuming its original version-specific setup will compile unchanged in a current installation.

What this project does—and does not—establish

This is a hands-on build for a physical Wii controller and a dedicated two-node Wi-Fi connection, rather than a phone touchscreen interface. It requires I2C wiring for the Nunchuck, a second ESP8266 board, a motor driver and a compatible two-motor chassis. Its documented software approach uses Visuino-generated code rather than a hand-written firmware example.
