To buy physical gold or silver wisely, compare the item’s fine-metal weight with the spot price, then compare the seller’s written retail price with its written buyback offer and all fees. Check whether you are buying bullion or a collectible, verify product details against official specifications, and decide how you will store and insure the metal before paying. Spot price is a starting benchmark—not the amount you will necessarily pay or recover.

How to buy physical gold or silver

Use the same checklist for every seller and product so the quotes are comparable. The CFTC and FINRA recommend getting the full price and costs in writing and checking a dealer’s reputation and complaint history. Retail precious-metal dealers are not federally regulated, according to their 2024 investor advisory.

  1. Choose the product and metal. Decide whether you want a bullion coin or bar valued mainly for its metal, or a collectible coin whose price may also depend on rarity, condition, or age.
  2. Find the fine-metal weight and purity. Use the product’s stated precious-metal content—not simply its gross weight—to estimate its metal value.
  3. Get comparable written quotes. Ask multiple sellers for the agreed purchase price, commissions, fees, payment and delivery terms, and any return conditions. Compare quotes for the same product, weight, payment method, and quote time.
  4. Ask for the buyback quote. Ask what the seller would pay if you sold the item back, including whether that offer depends on its condition or other requirements.
  5. Check the seller and product. Review the dealer’s reputation and complaints; compare U.S. Mint bullion coins with official specifications and clarify any authenticity guarantee.
  6. Settle storage and insurance. Account for storage, insurance, and administrative costs, and confirm how you can access or take delivery of the metal.

The U.S. Mint does not sell its bullion coins directly to consumers. It distributes them through Authorized Purchasers, which supply wholesalers and retail dealers. The Mint’s current Authorized Purchasers list shows participation in that distribution network; it is not a government endorsement and does not mean every listed firm sells directly to individuals. Check the list and consumer guidance on the U.S. Mint Authorized Purchasers page and U.S. Mint bullion coin information.

What spot price, premium, and spread mean

Spot is the cash price for immediate delivery of physical metal, quoted in dollars per troy ounce, according to the CFTC and FINRA’s 2024 advisory. Their explanation is that it “should be easy to get from financial news or quote providers.” The spot quote gives you a baseline; it is not a consumer retail offer.

  • ►1 gram .999 FINE Pure Silver Bars or Rounds, size’s may vary,
  • ► Designs are selected at random and may include military and religious themes and animals
  • ►10 one gram pure fine silver ingots

Estimate the metal-value baseline by multiplying the current spot price by the product’s fine-metal weight in troy ounces. Then compare that estimate with the seller’s retail quote. The difference is part of the retail premium. Ask the seller how it calculates the quote and whether commissions or other charges are included.

A dealer normally sells above spot and buys back below spot. The gap between the dealer’s selling and buyback prices is the spread. Premiums, the spread, and other costs mean the metal’s price must rise enough to cover them before you break even. A buyback offer is not a promise of profit, and the CFTC and FINRA do not provide a universal “fair premium” or average spread applicable to every product and seller. The amounts change with the product, seller, market, and transaction terms. For the agencies’ guidance, see the CFTC and FINRA precious-metals advisory.

The Mint notes that its premium structure can change.

Bullion coins, bars, and collectible coins

Bullion is primarily valued for its precious-metal weight and content. A collectible or numismatic coin may also carry a premium based on rarity, condition, age, or limited mintage. The U.S. Mint describes these distinctions in its bullion coin information.

Before paying a collectible premium, ask the seller to explain what supports it and how the item would be valued for resale. Do not assume that a premium based on rarity or condition will be recovered when you sell. For either kind of product, compare fine-metal content, total price, buyback terms, and fees—not just the coin’s face value or advertised discount.

How to check whether a coin is authentic

For a U.S. Mint bullion coin, compare its weight, diameter, and key design features with the Mint’s published specifications. Ask whether a third party has certified the specific item or whether the seller guarantees its weight and precious-metal content. A suspiciously low price deserves additional scrutiny. The Mint’s guidance is available at U.S. Mint bullion coin information.

The Mint says genuine U.S. Mint bullion coins have government-guaranteed weight, content, and purity. That guarantee describes genuine Mint issues; it does not establish that a particular coin offered by a seller is genuine. Packaging, a certificate, appearance, or one informal home test should not be treated as conclusive proof. The consulted official guidance does not establish one at-home test that authenticates every bullion product. If you are uncertain, have the item examined by a reputable dealer or qualified coin professional using appropriate methods.

Where and how to store bullion

Storage is both a cost and an access decision. For coin care, the Mint recommends appropriate holders, cool and dry conditions, careful handling, and keeping purchase documentation. It also identifies a bank safe-deposit box as one option and advises checking whether home insurance covers the full replacement cost of a home collection. Its guidance is about coin care and collection storage, not a comparative security ranking of home storage against bank storage. See the U.S. Mint coin-care guidance.

If considering dealer or vault storage, get clear answers in writing before committing:

  • Is specific metal allocated to you, or does your account show only a balance?
  • Where is the metal held, and who holds legal title?
  • What does insurance cover, and what exclusions or limits apply?
  • What are the storage, insurance, and administrative charges?
  • Can you inspect, withdraw, or arrange delivery of the metal, and what does each option cost?

The CFTC and FINRA identify storage and insurance among potential costs and warn that fraudulent sellers have charged customers for metal that did not exist. Treat a storage arrangement as something to verify—not as a guarantee of safety or ownership.

Sales warning signs and transaction costs

The CFTC and FINRA advise consumers not to act on cold calls, unsolicited email, junk mail, social media promotions, or infomercials. Research the dealer, check complaint history with consumer organizations or state authorities, and get the full retail price, commissions, and fees in writing before agreeing to buy. Ask directly what the dealer would pay if you sold the metal back the next day.

Include every cost that affects what you pay or could recover: product premium, dealer spread, commissions, payment or delivery charges, and—if applicable—storage, insurance, and administration. State sales and use tax treatment varies and is not established here; check the rules for your jurisdiction or consult a qualified tax professional.

Special caution for precious metals in a self-directed IRA

The CFTC and FINRA advisory gives specific warnings about precious-metals sales involving self-directed IRAs. Storage, insurance, administrative costs, taxes, and penalties may apply, and retirement-account rules are complex. This is a separate decision from buying bullion for personal possession; do not treat a dealer’s sales pitch as individualized tax or retirement-account advice.
