Choose an offline AI laptop by starting with the model and runtime you intend to use, then checking whether the laptop has enough usable memory, compatible acceleration, and storage for that workload. “AI-ready” branding alone does not establish that an app or feature works without an internet connection.
Start with the model, not the laptop label
There is no single laptop specification that guarantees every local AI model will run well. A small, quantized model may work on a modest system; a larger model, longer context, or multimodal workload can need substantially more memory. Decide what you want to run and how responsive it needs to be before comparing machines.
- Name the runtime and target model. Check the runtime’s supported operating systems, processor or GPU backends, and model formats. Hardware specifications alone do not prove compatibility.
- Choose a realistic model variant and context size. Quantization can reduce the memory required for model weights, while a longer context can increase runtime memory use.
- Set a speed and portability target. More memory and stronger graphics hardware may improve the range of workloads you can handle, but can bring trade-offs in cost, weight, heat, and power use.
- Verify offline operation feature by feature. Confirm that the model weights can be stored locally and that the particular app feature does not require a server, account check, or periodic connection.
- Allow SSD space for model files. Downloaded weights and multiple model variants use storage; SSD capacity is not a substitute for working memory.
Size memory for weights, context, and the rest of the system
Memory is usually the central sizing question. A model needs room for its weights, and the runtime also needs memory for context and other work. The operating system and open applications need room too, so a machine whose advertised capacity barely matches a model’s weight estimate may not be comfortable in practice.
NVIDIA’s GPU memory explainer relates memory estimates to parameter count and precision and explains how quantization changes the calculation. Treat such estimates as a starting point, not a guaranteed minimum: architecture, context length, batch size, runtime allocations, and the operating system affect the actual requirement. Ollama’s published scheduling examples show memory use varying with context and workload.

For one dated illustration, NVIDIA’s October 2024 discussion of running larger LLMs locally estimated about 13.5GB for a 27-billion-parameter model at 4-bit before overhead, and cited 19GB of VRAM for fully GPU-loaded Gemma 2 27B in that example. Those figures describe that example, not a universal laptop requirement or a promise of performance on current software.
Compare the two main hardware paths
Apple silicon systems use unified memory shared by the processor and graphics hardware; discrete-GPU laptops have system RAM as well as dedicated GPU VRAM. These are different configurations, and their capacities are not interchangeable one-for-one. NVIDIA notes that GPU offloading can help accelerate a model that does not fit wholly in VRAM, but the system still needs enough RAM for the full model.

Check whether “offline” means fully offline
Local execution and cloud-assisted features can coexist in the same product. Apple’s developer documentation distinguishes its on-device Apple Intelligence model, which can work without a network connection, from Private Cloud Compute, which uses server-side processing and therefore is not an offline path. Apple describes the on-device model as “useful for apps that need an always-available solution that doesn’t require a network connection” in Adding server-side intelligence with Private Cloud Compute.

Apple Intelligence is not the same thing as a third-party local-model app. Apple’s feature availability varies by supported device, software, language, and region; its Apple Intelligence support page also explains device and download requirements. Check the precise feature you plan to use rather than assuming that an “AI” feature on a laptop is locally processed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan for storage separately from memory
Model files must be downloaded before they can be used offline, and keeping several models or quantized variants takes additional SSD space. Apple says Apple Intelligence on-device models download to supported devices and specifies a storage requirement on its support page; third-party model libraries likewise require local space for weights. Storage holds files, while RAM or unified memory and GPU VRAM support active inference.
