The Atari VCS is a compact x86 PC and console hybrid built around AMD’s Ryzen Embedded R1606G processor. Its reviewed configuration has 8GB of RAM, 32GB of eMMC storage and an internal M.2 slot that accepts SATA SSDs. Storage is the simpler upgrade; reaching the RAM slots requires deeper disassembly. The hardware can run Windows or Linux in PC Mode, but its dual-core processor and Vega 3 graphics make it better suited to retro games, emulation, media and light desktop use than modern AAA gaming.

What the teardown reveals

Inside the VCS is an x86 system-on-chip (SoC), memory, onboard eMMC storage and a motherboard with expansion options. That makes it more PC-like than a typical ARM-based retro console, although its compact enclosure and Atari software layer give it a console-style experience.

Tom’s Hardware reviewed a retail configuration with 8GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Its review reported a $399 launch price in 2021; that is a historical launch figure, not a current price. The review also found an internal M.2 slot for storage expansion.

What the Ryzen Embedded R1606G can do

AMD’s 2021 product brief specifies the R1606G as a two-core, four-thread processor with a 2.6GHz base frequency and a maximum one-thread boost of 3.5GHz. Its integrated Radeon Vega graphics have three compute units. AMD lists configurable 12–25W TDP and DDR4-2400 memory support for the platform. These are chip specifications, not a guarantee that the VCS will sustain any particular speed in every workload.

  • Packed with over 200 built-in Atari games + bonus titles. Pac-Man & Galaga not included. Full Game list listed below.
  • Includes Atari console, games instructions, 2 wireless joysticks, USB power cable, HDMI cable, and user manual. System connects directly to TV.

  • User Guide Languages: English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, German, Dutch, Japanese and Arabic. Dynamic RGB LED lights.

The processor is a genuine x86 PC chip, not a mobile ARM processor. PCWorld described the VCS in 2019 as a low-end PC built around this dual-core, quad-thread part, while Tom’s Hardware’s later review cautioned that the integrated graphics and two-core design constrain demanding games. That distinction matters: x86 compatibility can broaden the software choices, but it does not make the VCS a modern gaming PC.

Which parts can you upgrade?

Part What the teardown establishes Practical implication
Internal storage The reviewed VCS has 32GB of eMMC storage and an M.2 slot for SATA drives. A SATA M.2 SSD is the most straightforward meaningful internal upgrade. The review installed a 256GB Crucial SATA M.2 SSD.
RAM SO-DIMM memory slots are on the underside of the motherboard. Memory is accessible, but reaching it requires deeper disassembly than adding storage. The review does not establish a maximum supported capacity.
Processor and graphics The R1606G is the embedded APU identified in the VCS. The cited teardown does not establish a processor or graphics upgrade path.

Storage: choose SATA M.2, not an assumed NVMe drive

The teardown review identifies the internal slot as supporting SATA M.2 SSDs and demonstrates a 256GB Crucial SATA drive. It does not establish NVMe compatibility. Match the drive type to the documented SATA interface rather than assuming that an M.2-shaped NVMe drive will work.

Memory: possible, but less convenient

The SO-DIMM slots sit beneath the motherboard, so a RAM upgrade entails more work than accessing the storage slot. AMD’s product brief lists DDR4-2400 support for the R1606G platform, but the available teardown information does not confirm the VCS’s maximum RAM capacity or which specific module configurations it accepts.

What to know before opening the case

The teardown exposes Torx fasteners, and the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module remains attached to the motherboard while its antenna leads are taped to the plastic top shell. Those leads can be strained if the lid is pulled up quickly.

Atari 2600+ PAC-MAN Edition Console, Game & Wireless Joystick
  • Atari 2600+ PAC-MAN Edition: The iconic console, now in PAC-MAN yellow with illuminated character icons across the front.
  • Backward and Forward Compatible: Play retro games just like you remember them on a system upgraded for today. Play both Atari 2600 and 7800 games on this 2600+ console. Compatible with everything in the Plus Platform, as well as with most original accessories and cartridges.

  • Wireless Joystick: Also includes a PAC-MAN Edition of the Atari CX-40+ Wireless Joystick.
  • HDMI Output: Connect instantly to modern TVs with HDMI output and widescreen mode.
  1. Use a suitable Torx driver and remove the case fasteners carefully.
  2. As you separate the top shell, lift it slowly and watch for the taped Wi-Fi/Bluetooth antenna leads.
  3. Avoid pulling the lid away abruptly; the antenna leads connect the shell area to the motherboard-mounted wireless module.
  4. For storage, use a SATA M.2 SSD. For RAM, expect more disassembly because the SO-DIMM slots are beneath the motherboard.

The teardown establishes these access and handling details; it does not provide a complete service manual or document every screw size and reassembly step.

PC Mode and realistic uses

PC Mode lets the VCS boot Windows or Linux, giving it flexibility beyond its Atari console interface. However, Tom’s Hardware reported that Windows installation was cumbersome and desktop use was unstable during its review. Treat that as an observation from that review, not a guarantee that every installation or workload will behave identically.

Official Atari 7800+ Console & Wireless Controller - HDMI Output
  • TIMELESS ‘80s DESIGN. The 7800 console takes its place among other ‘80s design icons like shoulder pads, crop tops, and aviator sunglasses.
  • ATARI+ PLATFORM. Atari+ Platform games and accessories are backward and forward compatible. Consoles, accessories, and games work together and are also compatible with most original accessories and cartridges.
  • ARE YOU POWER-READY? Includes a USB-C power cable but does not come with a wall charging plug for your outlet. You’ll need to pick up a 1A USB power adapter if you don’t have an extra one at home.
  • Includes Bentley Bear’s Crystal Quest Cartridge - In this brand-new sequel to Crystal Castles, you’ll find power-ups, hidden paths, a challenging variety of enemies…and one adorable bear. Everything a platforming fan could possibly want.
  • 2 Systems in 1 - Plays both Atari 2600 and 7800 game cartridges. HDMI-Ready - Connect to any screen via HDMI so you can enjoy every last pixel.

The R1606G’s x86 design and Vega graphics are a substantial step beyond the ARM hardware in many inexpensive retro boxes, but the two-core/four-thread CPU and three-compute-unit GPU are limiting factors for current demanding games. The cited review specifically warned against expecting demanding AAA titles from Steam or Epic to run well.

  • More fitting: retro gaming, emulation, media playback or streaming, and light PC tasks.
  • Less fitting: modern AAA gaming or relying on the VCS as a consistently stable general-purpose Windows desktop.
