Former Apple engineer Andrew (also reported as Andriy) Pletenetskyy founded 7sensors, which introduced its automated indoor Grow Box in 2016. The nearly six-foot cabinet was designed to manage lighting, watering, temperature, humidity and airflow from a plant-growing app. The company announced a Kickstarter campaign to fund production, but the available reports do not establish whether the product reached buyers.
What was the 7sensors Grow Box?
7sensors was a Silicon Valley hardware startup founded by former Apple engineer Andrew Pletenetskyy, whose first name was also rendered as Andriy in company materials. Its Grow Box was presented in 2016 as a nearly six-foot cabinet for growing plants indoors with much of the environmental care automated. TechCrunch’s 2016 report covered the prototype; the company described the product in a November 9, 2016 release.
How was the Grow Box supposed to work?
The intended process was to place a seed or plant inside, choose a plant recipe in the app, and let the cabinet manage growing conditions. The company said the app could control watering periods, nutrient inputs, heat, light exposure and humidity. The system was also described as managing airflow and automatically watering plants. The company estimated that users would need to refill its water about once a month; this was a company claim, not an independently verified operating result.
The product used organic soil rather than a hydroponic nutrient solution, a distinction the company emphasized. TechCrunch reported that the cabinet used reflectors and was designed to consume energy comparable to a single light bulb. In its 2016 release, 7sensors put average power use at 100 watts. That figure is the company’s stated average, not a measured independent test.

What did 7sensors say it had grown?
TechCrunch reported that the company had grown bell peppers and a cannabis plant while prototyping the Grow Box. Those were reported prototype results, not findings from an independent agronomic trial; the reports do not provide controlled comparisons, yield figures or evidence that the results were replicated.
Did the Grow Box go on sale?
In November 2016, 7sensors announced a Kickstarter campaign intended to raise money for production. The company said it had worked on the product for three years. The available reports do not establish whether the campaign met its goal, whether production units shipped, or whether 7sensors continued operating after the launch period. There is therefore no confirmed basis here to say the Grow Box is currently available to buy.

What did the founder say about the product?
In the November 9, 2016 release, founder Andriy Pletenetskyy described the intended appeal of home-grown produce: “It’s how food should taste.”

When evaluating another indoor grow box, check what it actually automates and whether its seller provides current evidence of availability and support.

- Automation: Confirm whether watering, lighting, temperature, humidity and ventilation are all automated, or whether some need manual adjustment.
- Growing method: Check whether the system uses soil or hydroponics, and what nutrients or growing supplies it requires.
- Capacity and upkeep: Compare cabinet dimensions and growing area, then check water-refill frequency and routine maintenance.
- Power and noise: Look for stated power consumption and ventilation details, and distinguish manufacturer claims from independent measurements.
- App control: Verify which settings can be adjusted remotely and whether the app and connected services are still supported.
- Delivery and support: Confirm that the product is shipping, and review warranty, replacement-part and customer-support details rather than relying on a campaign announcement.
