1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Chinese text changed after you removed a web font, first identify what changed: missing boxes or blanks usually point to font coverage, a different but readable typeface points to fallback styling, regionally unexpected glyphs may need accurate language metadata and a suitable font, and genuinely garbled characters require checking the text data rather than just the font. Restore an ordered, tested fallback stack on the affected text, declare its language accurately, and inspect which font renders the characters.
Identify the kind of display problem
Removing a web font can expose the browser’s next available font. That may change the appearance without damaging the text. But missing glyphs, blanks, regional glyph differences, and garbled characters have different causes and should be diagnosed separately.
- Boxes or blank spaces: A candidate font may not contain one or more required Chinese glyphs. The Unicode Consortium lists tofu-style boxes, code-point boxes, and blank spaces among possible signs of missing font support: Unicode Consortium: Display Problems?
- Readable text in a different style: The fallback is rendering the characters, but it may have different shapes, weight, or spacing from the removed font.
- Legible but regionally unexpected glyph forms: Some Han characters are shared across Chinese and Japanese, while customary glyph forms can differ. Language metadata and font choice can influence the result.
- Garbled or nonsensical characters: Treat this as a possible text-data or decoding problem. Changing fonts cannot correct characters that were decoded incorrectly.
Restore a deliberate Chinese font fallback
CSS tries font families in the order listed. A browser can also select fonts character by character when an earlier font lacks a glyph. Include names that suit the intended Chinese script or locale, followed by a generic family; named fonts are not guaranteed to exist on every user’s device. See MDN’s font-family reference.
For a page whose content is Simplified Chinese, this is an illustrative starting point:

<html lang="zh-Hans">
.chinese-content {
font-family: "Noto Sans CJK SC", "Microsoft YaHei", "PingFang SC", sans-serif;
}
These family names are examples, not a promise that each is installed. Test the actual stack on the platforms and browsers you support. For Traditional Chinese, identify the content’s intended language and region—for example, zh-Hant with a more specific region when known—and choose available fonts that produce the intended forms.
Set the language for the content
Declare the language that the text actually uses, not a language inferred from a visitor’s location. Put lang on the document when its content is predominantly one language, or on the relevant section or span when a page mixes languages. W3C International guidance explains that language information can guide font selection in some browsers, and that language-specific CSS can give authors more control: W3C International: Unicode Migration.

Language metadata does not guarantee that every browser will choose the same font or glyph form. When regional typography matters, pair accurate language declarations with an appropriate font and test the result in supported environments.
Follow this repair sequence
- Record the symptom. Note whether characters are missing, blank, merely restyled, regionally unexpected, or garbled.
- Inspect the affected element. In browser developer tools, check its computed
font-family, inherited rules, and any remaining@font-facedeclarations. Look for a later rule or broad reset that replaced the intended fallback. - Add an ordered fallback stack. List suitable Chinese-capable font families for the content’s script or locale, then end with a generic family such as
sans-serif. - Declare the language accurately. Set
langon the document or the specific Chinese content, particularly on mixed-language pages. - Check the rendered font and glyphs. Use developer tools’ rendered-font information, where available, and test characters that failed. Chromium’s text-stack documentation describes trying CSS-listed web fonts and system fallback to fill glyph gaps; if no usable glyph is available, a missing-glyph box can remain: Chromium Blink text stack.
- If retaining a web font, verify its delivery. Confirm that the
@font-facefamily name matches the CSS reference and that the font resource loads. Thefont-displaysetting affects what appears while a web font is unavailable or loading; a temporary fallback during loading is not the same as a permanently missing glyph. See MDN’s font-display reference. - Check text data if the characters themselves are wrong. Inspect the actual string or code points and confirm that the document is decoded according to its real encoding. Do not assume a font change will fix garbled text.
- Test supported environments. Operating systems and browsers differ in installed fonts and fallback behavior, so success on one machine does not establish coverage everywhere.

- Coverage: Does the font contain the Chinese characters your content uses?
- Regional fit: Does it render the intended Chinese glyph forms?
- Availability: Is it bundled and delivered by your site, or does it depend on fonts installed on the user’s system?
- Visual consistency: Does fallback noticeably change the page’s typography or layout?
- Delivery behavior: Does the font load reliably, and what appears while it is loading?
If the design must remain consistent and system fallbacks are insufficient, use a properly licensed web font with the required coverage, or serve an appropriate subset that covers the text. Unicode Consortium guidance recommends CSS web fonts as a way for content to control text display. If you keep a downloadable font, verify both its CSS family reference and its resource response.

A font fallback can fill missing glyphs only when a usable font containing those glyphs is available. If boxes remain, inspect the computed stack and rendered fonts rather than repeatedly changing unrelated CSS. If the characters are garbled or are the wrong characters—not simply styled differently—investigate the string and decoding path. Unicode Consortium guidance treats incorrect or garbled text and lack of font support as distinct display-problem categories: Unicode Consortium: Display Problems?
