Chinese web fonts are often large because a font that supports broad Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) text must include far more glyphs than a Latin-only font. The actual bytes a page downloads depend on which language and regional forms the font includes, how many weights are packaged, and whether the font is split into subsets that match the page’s text.
Why CJK fonts need more glyphs
Latin text can be rendered with a comparatively small set of letters and symbols. A font intended for broad CJK use needs a much larger repertoire of characters, so a complete font resource can be substantially larger. A site does not necessarily send every glyph to every visitor: its font packaging and delivery strategy determine which resources the browser requests.
CJK is a useful umbrella term for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean writing systems, but it does not mean that one identical glyph design suits every language or region. Source Han Sans documents five language deployments: Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese for Taiwan, Traditional Chinese for Hong Kong, Japanese, and Korean. It describes localized glyph forms that depend on language-tagged text and OpenType locl support. Source Han Sans documentation
Coverage, regional forms, and weights all affect package size
A broad package can be convenient when a site serves multiple CJK audiences, but it may carry resources a particular audience does not need. Noto CJK offers language-specific and region-specific packaging options. Its documentation warns that a regional variable-font package containing all five language variants across all seven weights would be larger than the language-specific variable package, undermining the size advantage. This creates two separate decisions: how many characters the font must cover, and which localized forms the visitor should see. Serving only Simplified Chinese may allow a narrower deployment than serving Chinese, Japanese, and Korean audiences from the same resources. Conversely, a multilingual site may need broader coverage or language-aware localized forms.
How CSS unicode-range affects delivery
The CSS unicode-range descriptor associates a font face with specified Unicode codepoints. The W3C specification defines the effective character map as the intersection of the declared range and the codepoints actually present in the font’s character map. W3C CSS Fonts specification

In practice, developers can split a font into multiple files and declare ranges so the browser can request resources relevant to a page’s text. The ranges must match the contents of those files. Declaring a range does not add missing glyphs or shrink an unsplit font; it only helps match text to the font faces and resources that exist.
Ways to reduce the bytes a page downloads
Choose coverage for the audience
For a site serving one language or region, evaluate a language- or region-specific deployment instead of automatically shipping a package that includes multiple CJK variants. For a site serving several CJK contexts, compare broad coverage with language-aware localized forms, and verify that the chosen font can render the needed characters correctly.

Subset when the required text is known
Google Fonts documents the API’s text= parameter for cases where the required characters are known, such as a logo or heading. Its guide says, “In some cases, this can reduce the size of the font file by up to 90%.” This is conditional vendor guidance, not a guaranteed saving for a full Chinese-language page; the outcome depends on the font and the text requested. Split resources with accurate unicode ranges
Multiple @font-face declarations can associate separate files with particular codepoint ranges. This can avoid requesting irrelevant subsets, provided each file contains the glyphs its declaration claims and the page’s text maps to those faces.

Compare formats and weight packaging
Google Fonts documents WOFF2 retrieval and variable-font API responses with axis-range metadata. Google Fonts Developer API documentation Variable packaging can reduce duplication across weights in some configurations, but combining many language variants in one package can offset that benefit, as Noto CJK’s packaging guidance illustrates. Compare the actual files in the format you will deliver and the weights your site requests rather than relying on a family’s name or a nominal package size.

There is no useful universal byte figure for “a Chinese font.” A meaningful comparison holds the font version, format, character coverage, and weight configuration constant. The reviewed project and standards documentation do not establish a like-for-like published byte comparison across Chinese font families and subsets, so measure the artifacts and requests used by your own pages.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Locale correctness: Do the glyph forms suit the language and region of the audience?
- Character coverage: Does the file contain every character the page needs?
- Total transferred bytes: How much font data does a representative page actually request?
- Request count: Does splitting resources avoid unnecessary bytes without creating an unsuitable delivery pattern?
- Weights and format: Are you comparing the same weights and delivery format?
- Subset potential: Is the text fixed and small enough for character-specific subsetting to help?
