The key is to subset the font binary: CSS unicode-range helps browsers choose a file, but does not remove glyphs from that file.
What actually makes a Chinese web font smaller?
A font file contains glyphs and supporting data. Subsetting creates a reduced font containing only the glyphs needed for a defined set of text or characters; it does not change the typeface design. FontTools can subset fonts using text, a text file, Unicode ranges, or glyph selections, and applies safe web-font-oriented optimizations by default. See the FontTools subset documentation.
WOFF2 is generally a strong web-delivery choice. web.dev says WOFF2 compresses 30% better than WOFF, a general format comparison rather than a guaranteed saving for any particular Chinese font. Your actual result depends on the original font, required glyphs, styles and weights, and the files visitors request. See web.dev’s font best practices.
Pair reduced files with CSS unicode-range when useful. That descriptor tells the browser which font resource applies to which characters; it does not shrink the font binary on its own. If the declared file still contains the entire original font, selective loading may avoid some downloads, but the file itself has not been reduced.
Choose a method that fits your content

Adobe’s Source Han Sans Version 2.005 ReadMe, released June 18, 2025, documents region-specific subsets for Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese (Taiwan), Traditional Chinese (Hong Kong), Japanese, and Korean. It describes these as suited to users who need one region’s glyphs and want a smaller footprint; the regional subsets do not require locl for their region-specific forms.
Before choosing, check the characters your pages display, Chinese locale coverage, number of styles and weights, which files are actually transferred, whether text is fixed or dynamic, and the font’s license and hosting terms.

Subset the font without losing required Chinese text
1. Inventory text and font files
Collect the characters used across the pages you intend to support. Include punctuation, names, and any user-generated content the page must render. Identify the exact font file, face, weights, and license. If visitors can enter arbitrary Chinese text, a short list gathered from current pages is unlikely to cover every future character; use broader coverage or an appropriate provider setup instead.
2. Choose the subset’s scope
For a fixed logo or heading, an exact character inventory may be appropriate if the text will not change. For full pages, build from representative production text or define sufficiently broad ranges. FontTools may ignore a requested character that is absent from the source font by default; its documentation describes a fail-on-missing option if you want the build to stop instead.

3. Match the Chinese regional forms
Decide whether the page needs Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese for Taiwan, Traditional Chinese for Hong Kong, or more than one. Keeping a code point is not enough if the retained glyph design is wrong for the page’s locale. Where content spans regions, provide the matching coverage rather than assuming one regional subset will render every preferred form.
4. Generate WOFF2 output
For a compatible source font and installed FontTools version, a command can take this general form:

--output-file=site-subset.woff2Adapt the input, inventory, and options to the actual font and installed version. FontTools documents text-file selection and WOFF2 output, but this example is not validated for every font format or font collection; check the installed version’s documentation for exact options and collection handling.
5. Declare files accurately in CSS
Set each @font-face rule’s family, style, weight, source, and unicode-range to match the file it serves. Use independently subsetted files if the goal is to reduce the glyph inventory as well as load resources selectively. A range declaration by itself does not remove characters from a source file.

6. Validate the pages visitors actually use
- Test representative production text, including punctuation and every supported Chinese region.
- Check for missing glyphs, unexpected fallback, wrong-region forms, and shaping problems.
- Use browser network tools to see which font files each relevant page and style actually downloads.
- Compare transferred bytes before and after for the same pages and conditions; there is no universal saving percentage for a particular site without measuring it.
Account for licenses and multiple styles
Confirm that the font license permits both subsetting and your intended hosting arrangement before distributing generated files. web.dev also notes that variable fonts can consolidate styles, but a variable font is often larger than one individual static style. It may help when you use multiple weights or styles; it is a separate style-count decision, not a replacement for removing unneeded glyphs. See web.dev’s variable-font guidance.
