Chickens in the best-known “VR” experiment did not wear headsets. Researchers projected video of free-range chicken behaviors onto the walls of a pen and, after five days, measured some biological changes—but the small study did not show that virtual scenes can replace pasture, enrichment, or good housing. The nearer-term application is mixed reality used by people for poultry-welfare training and barn inspection.
Did chickens really wear VR headsets?
No. The Iowa State University study used room-scale projection, not head-mounted displays. Researchers lined all four walls of a pen with vinyl projector-screen material and showed recorded scenes of chickens perching, nesting, scratching, dustbathing, and using vegetated areas during daylight. The researchers designed the scenes around behaviors associated with positive affect and laying hens’ normal time budget.
The experiment involved 34 early-lay White Leghorn hens randomly assigned to projected-video or control groups. Each group occupied a 9 ft × 9 ft × 7 ft pen, and the exposure lasted five days. The 2022 study in Frontiers in Virtual Reality therefore tested a projected visual environment—not chickens using consumer VR equipment.
What did the chicken VR experiment find?
Compared with controls, hens exposed to projected scenes showed higher in-vitro blood killing of the tested avian-pathogenic E. coli serotypes O1, O2, and O78 (p < 0.05). The finding was positively associated with corticosterone (p < 0.01). The researchers also reported changes in some neurochemical measures and gut-microbiota taxa.

There was no significant body-weight difference: average weight was approximately 1.15 kg in both groups. The study found no difference in overall gut-microbiota alpha or beta diversity. The authors described the results as biological effects that suggest a possible benefit, while also noting that “the extent to which biological functions aside from behavior are affected by VR is unclear.”
Can projected VR make chickens happier or replace free-range housing?
The findings are an interesting research signal, not proof that the hens were happier or that projection is a substitute for outdoor access. The reported immune-related result came from an in-vitro blood test; the study does not establish that projected scenes prevent disease in a commercial flock. Nor does a five-day experiment with 34 hens establish long-term welfare effects or performance at farm scale.

A projected image also cannot provide the physical features of a real environment: pasture, litter, perches, airflow, sunlight, or room for social behavior. The study supports investigating projection as a possible visual enrichment technique, but it does not show that screens can replace these conditions or sound husbandry. The authors themselves use cautious language: “Although several biological parameters were influenced by VR treatment in hens, suggesting that VR can be used to improve host resistance to pathogens and gut health in poultry.”
What would it take to recreate the projected setup?
The experimental arrangement used video projected onto vinyl screen material covering four pen walls. A portable projector is a practical component for a classroom demonstration or research setup, but the paper does not establish a consumer projector specification or show that any particular model reproduces the study’s effects. A demonstration should not be presented as a validated welfare intervention.

Beyond projection equipment, reproducing the arrangement means thinking about the room-scale display, suitable recorded scenes, daylight exposure, and the birds’ actual housing and care. The experiment’s result applies to its specific setup and five-day exposure; it is not a prescription for a farm installation.
Where is mixed reality more likely to help poultry farming?
Training and perspective-taking
The University of Bonn’s VisioChick project proposes VR glasses, software, and teaching materials to help trainees, teachers, and students understand poultry welfare by changing perspective. Its planned mixed-reality glasses are for people learning about housing and animal protection; the project does not describe chickens wearing headsets. VisioChick’s project information points to education rather than a chicken-facing headset.

Remote barn inspection and education
A 2025 article in Smart Agricultural Technology describes smart glasses combining thermal-infrared, ultraviolet, and RGB cameras with position tracking and virtual tours embedded in a 3D barn model. The described applications include remote insight into poultry-housing conditions, education, and welfare assessment. These are human-facing tools for viewing and interpreting a barn, not evidence that virtual reality changes a bird’s experience. The 2025 article describes the system and its intended uses.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is chicken VR the future of humanity?
Not in the literal sense of putting headsets on livestock. The experiment is a narrow but real example of using projected imagery to study animal responses. Its results invite further investigation; they do not settle whether such imagery improves welfare in the long term or at commercial scale. The more immediately understandable role for immersive technology is helping people learn about poultry housing and inspect conditions remotely.
