For steady depth, first trim the submarine close to neutral buoyancy, then use the hydroplanes for fine corrections. A pitch controller can keep the hull level, while a pressure-based depth controller can help hold a chosen depth. Neither replaces correct trim, and a receiver-loss failsafe serves a different purpose: bringing the model to the surface if radio control is lost.
How submarine controls work together
Precision comes from assigning each control the job it does best. NIST’s Intelligent System Control model assigns the rudder to left-right steering, sail planes to depth control, stern planes to pitch and depth control, and ballast tanks to buoyancy and trim. In practice, ballast should handle gross diving and surfacing, while the planes make smaller corrections as the model moves through the water.
Trim is the starting point: a model that is substantially too buoyant or too heavy will be harder to control with hydroplanes alone. Set buoyancy and balance in the water where the submarine will operate, then tune electronic assistance around that stable baseline.
Pitch controller or depth controller?
These devices address different control objectives. A pitch controller responds to the submarine’s attitude; a depth controller responds to water pressure as an indication of depth. The R/C Sub Electronics Subcommittee describes both as aids that preserve manual control rather than as substitutes for the operator.

SubTech’s model-submarine control-electronics documentation describes proportional automatic depth control, pitch stabilization, and SubSafe, a missing-pulse detector that automatically brings the boat to the surface. Actual installation requirements depend on the particular controller and ballast actuator; check the device documentation for compatibility.
How many radio channels does an RC submarine need?
The R/C Sub Radios Subcommittee gives three channels as the normal arrangement for a dynamic-diving model: throttle, rudder, and stern planes. A static-diving model normally adds a fourth channel to operate its ballast system. These are typical minimum arrangements, not a guarantee that every transmitter, receiver, mixer, or auxiliary function uses the same setup.

The receiver turns radio commands into outputs for servos and the electronic speed controller (ESC). If the submarine has an X-tail, an onboard mixer or transmitter mixer converts ordinary left-right and up-down commands into coordinated movement of its four stern surfaces. Conventional rudder-and-stern-plane layouts do not need that mixer, according to the R/C Sub Electronics Subcommittee.
Set up and test the controls in a safe order
- Balance and trim the hull: In the operating water, set the model close to neutral buoyancy and check that its balance is appropriate. Correct buoyancy and trim before relying on automatic controls.
- Center mechanical linkages: With electronic trims and mixers not yet compensating for errors, center the rudder, stern-plane, and bow- or sail-plane linkages mechanically.
- Check the ESC: Verify that throttle direction is correct and that motor response is proportional to the transmitter command.
- Tune pitch stabilization gently: Adjust the pitch controller so it makes measured corrections around level running instead of hunting back and forth.
- Configure depth control only after trimming and leak-testing: Confirm that manual commands can override its corrections before water trials.
- Test signal-loss recovery with the model restrained: Keep the ballast system safe during the test, then confirm that loss of receiver signal triggers the intended surfacing action.
- Check X-tail mixing at low throw: Verify the direction of movement of every surface before increasing control travel or beginning water trials.
What signal loss underwater means
Underwater radio control is not a substitute for an onboard recovery plan. A receiver-loss failsafe monitors for missing pulses or transmitter failure and, in typical designs, waits a programmable delay before commanding a ballast blow or another surfacing action. The exact action depends on the installed electronics and ballast system, so test the configured response rather than assuming that all receivers or submarines behave alike.

A pitch controller and depth controller do not perform this recovery job: they assist normal attitude or depth control while valid control signals are available. Treat failsafe activation as a recovery event and confirm its behavior with the submarine safely restrained before operating it submerged.
