Google Cloud does offer cryptomining protection worth up to $1 million, but it is not an automatic payout or cash insurance. Eligible customers can request Google Cloud credits for qualifying Compute Engine costs from an undetected, unauthorized mining attack, subject to strict eligibility, workload, prevention and filing rules.
What the $1 million protection actually provides
Google Cloud’s Cryptomining Protection Program may issue credits to eligible customers for qualifying costs from unauthorized cryptomining on supported Compute Engine virtual machines. The program terms cap credits at $1 million per customer in any 12-month period; that is a maximum, not a guaranteed amount. Google decides whether credits are due and how much to issue under its program terms.
The benefit is Google Cloud credit, not cash reimbursement. The terms state that credits have no cash value. Credits expire 12 months after they are issued or when the customer’s Google Cloud agreement ends, whichever occurs first.
Who qualifies—and which workloads are covered
To qualify, a customer must use Security Command Center (SCC) Premium or Enterprise, activate it across the full Google Cloud organization, and follow Google’s cryptomining detection best practices. The program applies to qualifying incidents involving supported Linux-based Compute Engine instances in the environment supported by Virtual Machine Threat Detection.

The benefit is not general protection for every Google Cloud service or every compromised workload. Google excludes:
- Windows virtual machines
- Confidential Compute virtual machines
- Google Kubernetes instances
- App Engine
- Cloud Run
- Cloud Functions
Customer-initiated mining is not covered. Unauthorized cryptocurrency mining also violates Google Cloud terms; the program does not authorize it.

When costs stop qualifying
The protection is aimed at costs caused by an attack that went undetected. If Google produces a relevant detection finding or otherwise notifies the customer, costs incurred after that notification are ineligible. In practical terms, a claim cannot use the program to offset continued mining costs after Google has alerted the customer.
Google also says attack response and remediation remain the customer’s responsibility. Credits do not replace investigation, containment, recovery, or security improvements.

A credit request must be filed within 30 days from when the attack began, according to the program terms. The request should include evidence supporting the incident and the customer’s compliance with program requirements, such as relevant logs, anomalous Compute Engine costs, and proof that required detection practices were followed.
- Establish the incident window: identify when unauthorized mining began and when it was detected or Google notified you.
- Preserve evidence: retain logs and records showing the affected Compute Engine instances, anomalous costs, and relevant findings or notifications.
- Document eligibility: gather evidence that SCC Premium or Enterprise was enabled across the organization and that the required best practices were followed.
- Submit the request within 30 days of attack start: use the process and requirements in Google’s current program terms.
Meeting the filing deadline and supplying evidence do not guarantee credits. Google determines whether the costs qualify and the amount, if any, to issue.

Cyber-insurance policies vary, so this program should not be treated as a substitute for insurance or as equivalent to a policy’s cash coverage. Its value is limited to eligible Google Cloud costs and the program’s terms.

Yes. Google’s terms allow the program to be changed or discontinued with 30 days’ notice. Check the current terms before relying on the benefit, particularly because Google controls eligibility and credit amounts.

Why Google introduced the protection
In its June 8, 2023 launch post, Google said cryptocurrency mining was a significant source of compromised cloud-account abuse. The post cited a September 2022 Google Cybersecurity Action Team Threat Horizons Report finding that 65% of compromised cloud accounts experienced cryptocurrency mining. That figure describes the report’s compromised-account findings; it is not a forecast of an individual customer’s risk or a program payout statistic.
