If your Fios Wi-Fi is slow, first compare a wired speed test with Wi-Fi near the router and in the problem room. If wired speed is good but Wi-Fi drops farther away, focus on band choice, interference, router placement, and extender placement—not on changing settings at random. Keep both Wi-Fi bands available on dual-band equipment, reboot before manually tuning channels, and use an extender to improve reach rather than expecting it to raise speed everywhere.

Why is my Fios Wi-Fi slow?

A weak result can come from the internet connection or from the wireless link between your device and the router. If possible, compare these three results:

  1. Run a speed test on a device connected to the router by Ethernet.
  2. Run the same test over Wi-Fi close to the router.
  3. Run it again in the room where Wi-Fi is slow.

If the wired test is also slow, the problem is not established as a Wi-Fi coverage issue; changing wireless settings may not address it. If wired speed and nearby Wi-Fi are good but the distant-room result is much worse, investigate coverage and interference. Verizon’s Wi-Fi – Slow or Intermittent Connection guidance covers wireless troubleshooting, but a test is needed to distinguish your own setup’s bottleneck.

Should I use 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz?

On dual-band Fios equipment, keep both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz enabled. The 2.4 GHz band generally reaches farther; 5 GHz can provide higher throughput at shorter range. Verizon describes 5 GHz as generally offering the highest possible throughput, with less range than 2.4 GHz, on its Wi-Fi troubleshooting page.

#1 Best Overall
VerizonW Fios G3100 Router (Renewed)
  • NAT support, NAPT support, IGMP snooping, DiffServ support, Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM) support, Access Control List (ACL) support, Quality of Service (QoS), virtual server support, Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), DNS proxy, reset button, Type of Service (ToS), Self Organizing Network (SON) technology, band steering, virtual DMZ, seamless roaming
  • The latest Wi-Fi generation, Wi-Fi 6 (802.11 ax) with speeds averaging 60% faster on 2.4 GHz and 38% faster on 5 GHz than previous Verizon Wi-Fi routers
  • Tri-band 4x4 antennas, increasing Wi-Fi coverage by an average of 63%
  • Self-Organizing Network technology for automatic band steering and single Wi-Fi Network name
  • Multiple queue processing for different packet types: DNS proxy, NAT/NAPT, Virtual Server and DMZ, Firewall function with Access Control List (ACL), Firewall function with Hacker pattern detection DOS

Use 2.4 GHz when a device is far from the router or needs that band to connect. Try 5 GHz for a compatible device when 2.4 GHz interference is a concern and the device is within useful range. Neither band is universally faster in every room: distance, obstructions, interference, and equipment all affect the result.

Should I keep SON on?

SON (Self-Organizing Network) combines supported bands under one Wi-Fi network name and steers compatible devices between 2.4 and 5 GHz; on supported setups it can also steer among access points. That is a sensible default for ordinary devices because they can use the available connection without you choosing a separate network.

Consider turning SON off only if a particular device requires a band-specific connection or cannot join the combined network. Some smart-home devices, for example, may require 2.4 GHz during setup. Options and labels differ by router and extender model, and not every older extender supports SON. Identify the equipment before changing settings; Verizon’s router support information describes model-specific behavior. If you disable SON or change band names, reconnect affected devices and reboot the router and extender.

Should I change the Wi-Fi channel?

Start with a reboot rather than guessing a channel. Verizon says newer routers generally select a less crowded frequency after a power cycle. Restart the equipment, allow it to come back online, and retest before making a manual adjustment.

  • IP sharing for LAN with up to 253 users
  • Firewall function with Access Control List (ACL)

If your model offers a channel availability scan or analyzer, use its results before choosing a channel. The E3200 guide describes a scan, channel analysis, and a score from 1 to 10, where a higher score indicates less congestion. Channel choices vary by equipment, and the guide says the selected channel must match on the router and Wi-Fi clients. Do not assume one channel or channel width is best for every Fios setup. Consult the exact model’s guide; Verizon’s network extender support page provides extender documentation and information.

Where should I put the router and extender?

Place the router for useful coverage

Position the router where it can serve the areas where you use Wi-Fi most, then repeat the nearby and problem-room tests. A router tucked beside a dead-zone room may not provide a strong enough signal throughout the home.

Use an extender to reach a weak area

An extender can help when Wi-Fi is good near the router but a particular area has poor reach. It is not a guaranteed speed upgrade: it needs a useful signal from the router to extend. Verizon warns that an extender placed too close to the router or other Wi-Fi devices can significantly reduce speed or block signal. Place it between the router and the weak area rather than right beside either the router or the dead zone, then test the result.

Check backhaul and compatibility

Backhaul is the connection carrying traffic between the router and extender. Depending on the paired equipment, that link may use Ethernet, MoCA wiring, or Wi-Fi. A wired path can avoid relying on a wireless link for that connection, but exact support and performance depend on the router-extender pairing.

What changes on the Verizon Router with Wi-Fi 6E?

Do not apply instructions for the current Verizon Router to every older Fios model. Verizon’s router FAQ says that this router manages 2.4 and 5 GHz together with SON by default and discusses Wi-Fi 6E and a 6 GHz band. Enabling 6 GHz can change security behavior and may require reconnecting devices that do not support WPA3. Before changing bands or security settings, confirm the router model and check its current instructions in Verizon’s router FAQ and support pages.
